Discuss or comment on anything relating to D.C.Thomson's second longest running comic. The home of Dennis the Menace. Has been running since 1938.

Our sub copy that came today (dated 25th Oct) already has £2.20 on the cover.

May be another bagged spectacular this week though for the shops, who can tell these days when loyal subscribers are so poorly thought of

(my main gripe is that when I took the subscription out we used to get exactly what the shop buyers got, this new regime where subscribers don't get gifts was rather swept under the carpet, it would have been nice for DCT to tell existing subbers that they were no longer to receive the same gifts as shop buyers do, but no, I only realised when my kids noticed it in the supermarket and I got my magnifying glass out on the weekly subscription incentive page.)

Huh? The issue currently in the shops says the next one is £2.00, so when the price rise was mentioned on the unofficial Beano forum by a subscriber, I assumed it was the next issue page that announced the price rise. So they increased the price and lied about it by denying it in the previous issue? Bang out of order, DC Thomson!

I'm sure all this has been explained here before several times, but price rises are determined by a different department than editorial/design, so that decision would have been made after last week's issue went to press. It's even unlikely they'd have known while they were putting together this issue, as barcodes are the last thing to be added, or changed at a moment's notice.

There's a bit too much eagerness on the Internet to accuse people of lying, when no such deception has taken place.

Exactly. On top of that, the cover goes to press before the rest of the comic (which is why the contents are usually on page 3, in case of late changes.)

Unfortunately, those who set the prices are entitled to insist that the price rise happens immediately, regardless of the embarrassment it can cause. I don't think that's appropriate, but editorial does not have a choice.

Actually, I've just noticed something incredibly relevant to this discussion.

My copy is the subscriber edition, and beside the barcode it includes a message about cover mounts not being available in all areas. This usually means there are cover mounts on the retail edition, so I'll look tomorrow to see if there are, and what price it is being sold at.

No cover mounts this week, even though it does say 'gifts may vary' in very tiny print. I think that's just standard small print for every issue now at the advice of the legal dept. Other mags have similar advisories to cover themselves. It's a sign of the times to prevent complaints I guess, if a gift has to be changed at the last minute or if they do a gift promo in certain areas and not others.

Cover price is £2.20.

At £2.20 the Beano is still great value. :)
