I've heard a lot of stories over the past six months that people couldn't get the app to work, couldn't get the site to accept payments for credits, or couldn't run the strips on PC due to a not powerful enough computer. And the PC version also has the ability to bypass payment completely - that bug (the same one I mentioned earlier) was a game breaker! They definitely didn't have the tech know how to make this work, and their PR was a disaster from start to finish, they totally wasted the publicity from the print comic's demise, and now they have the cheek to let an artist (whose work wasn't even published!) announce the demise of the digital comic instead of doing so themselves.
Perhaps he simply beat them to it?

As Wilbur has pointed out, DCT never specifically embargoed the announcement. And folks had already begun to suspect something was up...

Maybe there'll be an official announcement very soon.

Wow.....and :( .

I really didn't think this would be the case. I was sure the lack of next issue links were just a faux-pas as we had caught up with the original launch. 13 weeks is not a really long time to see if something as new and different as this would work - the investments in IT and programming (eventually) should surely warrant giving it a year and a proper advertising campaign?

For an 'online' only comic, I was surprised that their Facebook and Twitter pages were rarely updated, and the other features of the app were never fully utilised either (the items you could 'collect' (how, by the way?!), your avatar was only used in the taster issue and never needed from then on... Etc etc

It's almost as if the editorial team were given 'one last chance' but never with the real backing or investment in the project.

Gutted...

However, Nigel Parkinson has been telling us to keep August 27th in our diaries for some time now... And he also hinted that 'they' are back...(who?)

To my mind, I guess Nigel will know that most readers of his blog would only really get excited about something to do with the world of comics.... Maybe DCT are planning to launch a brand new comic and will free up the staff and resources to concentrate on that?

The Dandy that we all knew and loved over the course of time kind of went in December anyway... Maybe this clears the floor and makes room for an all-new comic that may (hopefully at least) continue some of the strips (such as Retro Active).

Fingers crossed that there is SOME good news for DCT comics fans to come

in publishibg, a failing comic lasts until the publishers get the sales figures or returns back. 13 issues might have been a decent run ib that case.

Unfortunateley, the digital version had far too many problems. Who would subscribe after the disaster of the free issue? There is certainly a case for an e-comic but it has to be good enough to buy. A 6 month hiatus would have been preferable to a poorly built product.

Sad but no surprise.

Nigel has stated in comments to that blog post that August 27th has nothing to do with DCT.

The only other thing I can think of is Boo which is a spooky kids comic coming out soon - but I do believe that is out in the autumn.

Do you have any more info on this? Who's publishing it?

I haven't a clue, but here's their Twitter page: https://twitter.com/BOOComic

Gary Northfield, Warwick Johnson Cadwell, Jamie Smart and many more will feature.

It seems that Paul Harrison-Davies is self-publishing it. http://paulhd.blogspot.co.uk/

Hi. Could one of you kind people provide a list of regular strips that appeared in the digital Dandy's 13-issue run, also marking out what issue they started, how many strips there were, and whether they were full-pagers or mini-strips? Cheers

Wasn't there more than 13 issues over 2 volumes as im sure there was a few then it started again from issue 1 but i could be wrong, maybe they could reprint the lot as a 1 off special like the recent summer & chrimbo specials.

13, all deleted, then 13 again. Most of the strips in the second run were duplicates from the first run, with more new ones towards the end (as other strips had been moved to earlier issues to replace reprints). Retro Active for example, the final part was the only one not repeated from the earlier run. While Desperate Dan's stories were all used twice, the first version lacked the voice acting.

At least three Jonah strips never saw the light of day, going by the filenames from issues 12 and 13 of the second run.

What keeps me living in hope of a return at some stage was the DCT announcement at the close of the Digital Dandy... That being...

"A DC Thomson spokesperson said, "The Digital Dandy team has worked hard to produce an interactive and engaging App. While the digital comic has delivered its promised mixture of daft, dramatic and different stories, the technology and format have let us down.

"For this reason, we're suspending the existing App. Discussions and planning are already underway to re-examine The Dandy’s digital offerings. It is still too early to announce what form this next stage will take but we would like to reassure readers that The Dandy remains a very important part of the company’s plans for the future."

Although that was last July....... It does sound like they still have it in mind... It was the technology they were not happy with rather than the comic itself.....

I still miss it and would love to see it back in some form. Cc
