No tears over digital Dandy

Should we shed tears that The Dandy — after 75 years of cow-pie-related yuks — is ceasing print publication to go digital? I don’t think so, really. It will still exist for those who like that sort of thing (even as a child, I found The Dandy as funny as a fistula). The burst of sentimentality attending its demise will have been the first time its existence impinged on most people in years. Those sad to see it go didn’t feel warmly enough toward the comic to actually buy it.

No doubt the Germans have a word for that category of thing, like The Dandy or poetry, that you don’t actually like but feel other people ought to.
Wow! It's made the news in Germany, Brazil (three sources), India and Mexico!

It's already been mentioned on Radio 2 by Chris Evans. Expect it to be mentioned on the Jeremy Vine Show or even the Today programme.
I started to say something sensible but my parents took over my brain!

Yes. I wonder. I'd give it a look after all the effort they put into it.

Meanwhile, I'll be walking the 150 yards (about 137 metres, fact fans) to BBC Radio Merseyside to give Billy Butler the scoop on the last ever print Dandy this afternoon. Unless it's raining, in which case I'll phone it in.
And it was on the Radio 4 news at 8!

...It was on Radio 5 at 5.30am (along with a song about 'where has Dandy gone'!). :)

Did anyone hear Tony Livesey's show last night? his guest was Paul Gravatt. Tony mentioned he was friends with John Geering back when he worked in newspapers in Lancashire.

I e-mailed the cartoon editor of the Weekly News this morning and he is still waiting for his copies - you'd think working for DC Thomson he could nip along the corridor and snaffle a copy.

Anyway here is the latest press mention of this subject - comments welcomed.

Yeah, you'd think so. You may even think someone who had work in the last issue and was instrumental in getting them their star cameo and garnered all that publicity would be able to get a copy.
Still nothing. Apart from my order being sent to America 'by mistake'.
Next week, DC Thomson begin organising an event in a brewery with mixed results...

I can see how you might feel peeved that Nathaniel Parkinson the seventeenth of 27 Walnut Avenue, Pennsylvania is, as i type, thumbing through your copy of the Dandy with an appropriate cartoon question mark hovering over his gulliver.

The fellow in the article above has made the most of his publicity by placing an advert in today's Metro. And, contrary to what I may have thought, he is selling it at the cover price - plus p&p.

I got my one from Ebay, but the email to confirm the order came from lasteverdandy.com

I was a bit suspicious when the Ebay auction said "more than 10 available" but had over 2000 already sold! Still as it was cover price I ordered anyway.

Thanks Digifiend, didn't spot it from the title.

It shows the issue being sent to print!

London Review of Books talks about the Dandy.

Yes, I've noticed a few errors, including a glaring one about when Bananaman started (1984? That's after his cartoon started, for crying out loud!), I already commented and the post is awaiting moderation.
