Re: What comics did you buy today?
It may be another word for slubberdegullion. Which is an insulting term.

Re: What comics did you buy today?
Not today but in the last couple of weeks I've managed to buy:
Silver Kid Western #1 - Streamline - 1955
Cracked #1 - Byblos - 1976 - I don't know much about this comic yet
The last remaining Hurricanes that I needed to complete the set. A couple need upgrading but it's another set completed and I'm enjoying the warm feeling that ensues!
2 Commando upgrades
Victor Summer Special 1987 & 1990
2000AD Winter Specials 1993 & 1994 - one more to go
Battle Holiday Special
Tiger Holiday Special 1976
Speed Summer Special 1980
Treasure #1 - Fleetway - 1963
2 Giant War Picture Libraries but these are for a swap deal with a Forum member.
Smash Holiday Special 1969 from another Forum member with the added extra freebie gift (thanks again) of 2 Bullet comics meaning I only need one more for the set (#144 if anyone has it please).
This morning, courtesy of yet another Forum member, I had delivered Fightin' Marines #1, Fightin' Navy #1 - both L Miller 1956, Flying Aces one shot - Streamline 1956, Wham #3 and #7 (#3 is reunited with the free gift I purchased a couple of years ago) and a very kind donation of some 'Famous Beauties of the Day' cards from Blue Bird. Thank you!
A busy time but some great additions and this is before Malcom confirms what I've won in the most recent Compal auction. I'll save that for a separate post.....hopefully.

The word is not in my copy of The New Oxford Dictionary Of English, so I suspect that Steve is having you on, Adam. On the other hand, it could be a newly-minted word by Millwall supporters to describe individual members of their team's current squad! 'Muff', as a noun, on the other hand certainly had a quite specialised meaning in the North West. I suppose it may have a similar meaning down here in Cornwall as well, but as I have not yet heard anyone use it, I cannot confirm that. I might ask around my local area in order to shed some light on the matter. Only kidding. I wouldn't dream of doing so. Might get my face slapped.Adam Eterno wrote:What a great word! Re: What comics did you buy today?
Well, I paid for my retro purchase today of the Nelson Lee library. A bit of a steal at £3 for a bound set of the first quarter of 1925.
I started to say something sensible but my parents took over my brain!
Re: What comics did you buy today?
Got my copy through the door a few weeks ago. A nice tribute and still find it hard to believe that we won't be seeing any new Carlos Strontium Dog strips anymore.tony ingram wrote:Picked up the latest Judge Dredd Megazine, which is bagged with a mini-magazine tribute to Carlos Ezquerra.
Reading comics since 1970. My Current Regulars are: 2000 AD (1977-), Judge Dredd Megazine (1990-), Spaceship Away (2003-), Commando (2013-), Monster Fun (2022-), Deadpool and Wolverine (2023-), Quantum (2023-).

Re: What comics did you buy today?
I first came across the word slubberdegullion in Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin novels but then shortly after that it was used in parliament by Boris Johnson I think.
Word Origin and History for slubberdegullion. n. "a slobbering or dirty fellow, a worthless sloven," 1610s, from slubber "to daub, smear; behave carelessly or negligently" (1520s), probably from Dutch or Low German (cf. slobber (v.)).

Re: What comics did you buy today?
Thank you, Adam, for the clarification. I'm considering buying a more comprehensive dictionary the next time I go to Truro. I can't remember the last time I went there. I've been living down here in Hayle for five months, and the longest distance I've travelled in that time is to Camborne, with my ex-wife on the bus. There is a W.H. Smiths in Penzance, and a small bookshop in Fore Street in St Ives, both of which I have visited recently, but I suspect I might need to place an order for a decent dictionary from those shops. I certainly wouldn't choose to go today though as there is a gale raging. Next door's TV aerial is wandering from side to side, threatening to detach itself from his roof.Adam Eterno wrote:https://www.dictionary.com/browse/slubberdegullion

Does your dictionary have the word Contrafibularities in it? If not you should burn it.

All my dictionaries were purchased from charity shops and are of forties or fifties vintage.

Re: What comics did you buy today?
Looks like a second home defeat in four days for Millwall. We're goin' dahn.
Aston Villa 4 Notts. Forest 4? Bloomin' Ada. Twenty minutes to go.
Spoke too soon now it's 5-4.
5-5 inevitably. They do have goalies I presume?
Champions League, what's that?

Champions League is my Room 101. It's a mad world where great teams like Sporting Lisbon, Austria Vienna, Rosenberg, Standard Liege, Rangers/Celtic etc wouldn't stand a chance against also-rans like Southampton, just because of TV audience.

Re: What comics did you buy today?
I'll get back on topic and mention my purchase at the ephemera fair on Sunday but I want to post a picture but it's been so overcast I can't get a decent image. Lightbulb light makes it too dim. I did also get an Easter 1938 Puck for £5.00.
