It hasn't arrived yet but I'm really happy with the purchase of issue #1-42 of Tiger from 1954/1955. I've been after #1 for ages and have narrowly missed it a couple of times in the last 6 months alone so to get a whole run is brilliant.

My completist nature is saying that I've got the most difficult ones so should I start collecting the set of 1500+. My better half soon put my completist thoughts firmly in a box!

I picked up the 2014 Battle reprint annual from a charity shop in Edinburgh yesterday. That Jordi Penalva cover gets everywhere!

Went to the ephemera fair on 31 March and came across these:

Rainbow nos. 1782-1795, 1797, 1800-1806, 1811, 1813-1821, 1823, 1824, 1826, 1827, 1845, 1846, 1850, 1852-1861, 1863-1890, 1891-96 dated March 10 to April 14 1956 (this is a single issue with six dates and numbers on it, probably due to industrial action), 1897 and 1898 which is the very last issue.

1792 Easter Number
1821 Firework Number
1873 Firework Number
1880 Christmas Number
1881 New Year Number

Eighty issue, £20 the lot.

I also got a few early seventies US comics and about ten 1970s Alan Class comics for £2 each. Latter were in near mint condition.

Nice haul there Steve. The industrial action is probably the one that launched GMS as GMS Publishing started less than two years after that.

And then there are the annuals, the summer specials, the sports libraries etc and also,
if you are a completist, you then have to go the whole hog and collect the Roy of the Rovers stuff as well. So I think your other half may have done you a favour in the end there, Adam.
I remember Steve Holland once had a plan to do a proper Tiger Index but, other than the somewhat sketchy prototype that I was helping him beef up it never happened and this might have had something to do with Steve's lukewarm interest in sport to start with which made Tiger, particularly post 1970, pretty unpalatable to him.

I always read to my children, especially TIGER and ROY OF THE ROVERS, but whereas my elder son, Andrew, got the habit from Hot-Shot Hamish, Billy's Boots and the like, and moved on to Sci-Fi, and relatively recently GAME OF THRONES and suchlike, my younger son, Russell, had to thank me and his mother through gritted teeth when some of his birthday and Christmas presents were books. He never read them. He just read what he needed to at school. In their chosen jobs though, they are both successful, well paid, and happy, with children of their own. Anything they need to read, they read. My ex-wife and I read a lot, but what more could we wish for them? There's a lot more to life than reading fiction.

I agree 100%! I had the idea of doing it with Valiant and I have all the comics and annuals and only need a couple of specials.....and then I remembered the Picture Libraries.....I admitted defeat!

My suggestion to you, Adam, is to start logging the content of the comics and the annuals. While that process is ongoing, which will take a while to do properly, buy in the specials and the picture libraries that you haven't got over the next twelve months or so, because unless you have access to the British Library, you will need to acquire them. My advice to you is that you should NEVER admit defeat, otherwise you will be lost before you even get properly started. Have the courage of your convictions and just do it.

GMS (or G M Smith if you prefer) is the company that later became Micron. It was formed by two of the ex-Fleetway / Amalgamated Press printers who left the company after one strike was resolved not to their satisfaction.
