The cover basically shows a very muscular bare-chested lad, gazing with great admiration at his own flexed arm muscle, his other hand on his hip. People doing sporty things abound in the background, not that this young Narcissus would notice them.

Indeed - and it's interesting that DCT were still peddling this old fashioned public schoolish sporty boys = healthy boys aesthetic. They should have been encouraging the kids to turn decadent and start glamming it up to their Marc Bolan and David Bowie records!

I wonder if anyone remembers the Hotspur's early 70s not ideally titled strip Return of the Fisters where the kids of the future have become incredibly lethargic because everything's done for them, but suddenly discover boxing and fighting again and all is well as they learn the joys of scrapping!

I just about remember that one. IIRC, Hotspur used the same basic storyline about a year or so later, but used football instead of boxing.

PS Pow! must be the most unusual spin-off annuals when they just had these weird superheroes like Magno, Electro and Aquavenger that had never appeared anywhere else.

The 1974 Tiger annual might as well have been called "Tiger book of wrestling, with couple of racing strips and a token sci-fi one chucked in". It was cover to cover "matmen"

Chatterbox, the edwardian magazine/storypaper had a "junior" spinoff called Chatterbox Newsbox which produced a few annuals. I saw a couple in the same shop (Oxfam, Lincoln) where i found the 1908 annual. But the Newsbox annuals where knackered, more like a loose collection of pages in a plastic bag, if i remember rightly they both dated from the 20's

I seem to recall that my local Library contained a whole range of 'Eagle' careers books with distinctive yellow covers, each one concentrating on a different area of employment like Journalism. There was also at least one Boys' World Fishing Annual.

Hi Phil,
yep that sounds like "He wants to be - an Eagle book of careers" featuring such memorable (half-page) strip as 'He wants to be a bricklayer' / plumber / farm worker / missionary / atomic energy engineer / book binder

47 carers were covered during the strip (a number of which were then reprinted in book form) which ran, on and off, in Eagle in 1956-9.

Frank Bellamy illustrated the 'barrister' career strip.

There was also a Girl book of careers.
