Quiet morning at work. Just been reading all these early 'Bewitched Belinda' stories and was wondering...


Do we ever find out what happened to her Dad? (who had been turned into a pig in first episode 17 11 '79). We last see him being left with the farmer - and presumably was later eaten?? It would be nice if Belinda's mum kissed him (or something) and turned him back, to save his bacon

That Sporting Sue strip looks like it was in either Cor or Whoopee as they have the Beano sized pages and the text at the bottom of the strip. haven't seen a Whoopee for decades but I seem to remember they had those text bits at the bottom, not so sure about Cor.

The Duke's Spook is not the work of anyone trying to imitate Reg Parlett. It is the fine work of AP comic strip veteran Arthur Martin who drew all kinds of strips for AP titles from the 1930's through to the late 1970's. For example Charlie Drake was a strip he drew for nearly 10 years (1958-1967) in Radio Fun and then Buster.

I'm concentating on the 60's onwards on my blog partly because I don't have many or any from the 50's..

But I found reprints from Radio Fun...Film Fun in Buster and others which I missed on my website to Reg..

There's a Wikipedia page on Freddie Davies which seems accurate.

He was especially popular as a children's TV personality around 1974 when he'd guest on The Sooty Show and had his own BBC children's series 'The Small World of Samuel Tweet,' set in a pet shop.

I suppose he must have been popular with kids around 1968 when the Buster strip started, too, probably mainly appearing as a guest on variety shows back then.

It was nice to see him in the 1995 film Funny Bones.

Freddie 'Parrot-Face' Davies' appeal as an entertainer seems quite incomprehensible now. With his signature look of a oversize bowler hat squahed down over his ears and virtually hiding his eyes and his lisping verbal delivery I think he is one of those comedians that comes under the category of 'you had to be there'.
His strip in Buster was new by the way, not a reprint.
Benny Hill was indeed a reprint from Radio Fun.
Whacko, starring handle-bar moustachioed Jimmy Edwards, came to Buster via Radio Fun where it had been drawn by Bertie Brown, the last strip the great artist ever drew, and James Malcolm. James Malcolm continued to draw it in Buster until Reg Parlett reprints replaced him with strips that had originally appeared in the pages of TV Fun where Jimmy Edwards had starred in yet another, very similar, school based strip.

He was really popular in 1968, I haven't checked wiki but on the sunday after England's World Cup win (July 1966) he was on the big Sunday night variety show, Blackpool Night Out, where a rather risque Bob Monkhouse and a rather under-rehearsed Tony Hancock also appeared that week. Freddie was really a children's entertainer, but he was with good company that night. I'll have to have a look at that show again.

By the way, Ray, mention of Whacko! (the TV show not related to the Ron Spencer-drawn strip) reminds me that one of the kids, and in fact the lead actor in the movie version 'Bottoms Up!' (!) was none other than Mitch Mitchell, who, three or four years after, became the drummer for Jimi Hendrix Experience! I know, I'm off-topic, but, blimey, the 60's eh?!
