Strange places to see characters!?!

Post by STARBOY »

I thought as it was a quite day on Comics UK that I would post this picture of Ooor Wullie painted on a Beach Hut in Elgin (Highlands). Has anyone seen any other characters painted in strange locations - I remember a few on Glasgow cable ends (ends of tennement building when part of it had been demolished,if that makes sense) in the 70s. (The link takes you to BBC Scotland site, click on the BIG PICTURE ICON to see)

Don't know if this counts, but there's an iron statue of the Grandma from the Giles cartoons standing on a plinth at the top of Princes St in Ipswich...

Of course, there are similar statues of Andy Capp, Minnie the Minx and Desperate Dan... the latter two are, obviously, in Dundee.

I stumbled onto the Andy Capp statue's existence by accident - it happens to be used on his Wikipedia article.

I wasn't aware of any Andy Capp statues so glad to see there is one for a great character (ditto Grandma). Another statue , although a lesser known character in the UK (very specifically a West of Scotland Icon) is the Galsgow Cowboy "Lobby Dosser "(link attached - sorry no idea how to load a pic on this site) by chartoonist Bud Neil ( the name Lobby Dosser is based on "Glasgow speak" for someone that sleeps in a hallway (a lobby) usually because they've had to much to drink) .

Not quite a statue perhaps but there's also a bust of Dan Dare in Southport:

I think that the most unusual one for me was Oor Wullie on a HGV cab. The guy who's cabin it is works from the Angus area in Scotland, so it was no surprise for me to see it!
I started to say something sensible but my parents took over my brain!
