What comics did you buy today?

Went to the comic fair in London on Sunday and picked up a mixed bag from Phil Clarke (but that's no way to talk about his wife) ahem! Titles were: Jingles from 1953, Womder from 1952, Jester (nice green paper) from 1936, Jingles from 1950 plus another two from 1937, Rainbow Christmas issue from 1950, Tip Tops from 1947, 1948 and 1952, Playbox from 1952, Bubbles from 1926 and 1936, Tiny Tots from 1930 and Young Folks Paper from 1887 and Figaro from 1898 the last two being story/humour papers. £70 the lot.

That's quite a haul, did they have any comics from the 70's like Lion & Thunder?

No it was all dealers in US comics but Phil Clarke knows i'll be there so he brings along UK stuff for me. He had some early Jags which my mate bought a few of. Incidentally he told me today that a complete run of Hurricane just sold on ebay for £600!

I beat him..£8.50 for a 1966 Buste with the first adventure of Galaxus..more than I normally spend But been after a large scale Buster for ages..can't wait to see Reg Parletts work in large size..

Congratulations, Peter, but this issue is not in large size; it is nearly the same size as Busters from 1972 and 1973 (maybe 2 cms taller than these), but not as small as those from 1975. The last large-sized issue of Buster appeared in October 1965. I hope that's not too disappointing.

The Parlett strips in that one should be Dinah Mite (reprinted in early Whizzer and Chips as Belle Tent) and Whacko!, I think.

Let us know how the Galactus saga begins! I suspect that will be the highlight of the issue.

Whacko!? Isn't that a Dandy strip about a medieval teacher who wears a suit of armour, and his class of unruly pupils? A medieval Bash Street in a way.

Or did both DCT and IPC/Fleetway have the same idea? Incidentally, Dinah Mite is also a Dandy character, but that's a confirmed case of both companies using the same name in different eras.

Whacko! as in the strip based on the TV comedy series of the same name, starring Jimmy Edwards as a public school headmaster. Should correctly be spelt 'Whack-O!,' I think. The original TV series finished in 1960, so maybe those mid-60s Buster strips are reprints from an earlier comic ... ?

Another strip of it ran in TV Comic in the early 70s (with nice art by Bill Titcombe) when the BBC revived the sitcom for a while, making new colour episodes reworked from the original scripts.

To be honest £8.50 sounds a bit steep to me Peter, but you do at least get a double helping of Solano Lopez art with both 'The Toys of Doom' and 'Galaxus'. One other original series worth noting is 'The Pirates' which appears on the centre pages (with art by either Leo Baxendale or Mike Brown). 'Whacko!' was indeed one of several reprints introduced to fill up the increased number of pages (in this case taken from the Jimmy Edwards strip in TV Fun).

EDIT: Just cleaned up that article actually, there was an empty section and some poor grammar. Tsk. Turns out the 70s version of the sitcom was spelt with no hyphen and a small O. So both spellings are actually correct.

Quite a good weekend, plenty of Car Boot Sales, some Commando's, a couple of nice condition Perishers books but the buy of the weekend was the following batch of annuals:

Beezer 1968, 1969, 1971 (all near mint)
Sparky 1967, 1969 (both lovely condition)
Bunty 1973 (skight tear to top of dw)
TV Comic 1954 (good only)
TV Fun 1957 (very good)
Mickey Mouse 1944 (poor)

All for the princely sum of £9.00

The Sparky's in particular are in fabulous condition but the vast majority are easily 9 out of 10.

All of this and a stack of brand new graphic novels as well.

What a weekend

Who cares if the Mickey Mouse one is poor quality - wartime editions must be very rare. If the Sparky 1967 doesn't have the "This Book Belongs To" section filled in on page 4, then it's in better condition than my copy. 50p each - you got some bargains there!

Seems to only be one regular car boot sale here in Hull - and it's at the wrong end of the city to easily get to on a Sunday! I rely on charity shops mostly, but no-one seems to be donating annuals lately. Apart from recent franchised tat and Guinness World Record books that is.

WOW stunning buys for £9 - especially (for me) Beryl The Peril 1969,
Dennis The Menace 1968, and Mickey Mouse (although they are all wonderful at that price). I just never see sales like that when I go to car boot sales nowadays (used ot a few years ago but rarely see any books before 1979 now) well done (through gritted teeth) enjoy lol
