1966 Dandy free this week!!
Back page of last week's Dandy advertises that this week's will have a free mini-comic of June 1966 Dandy issue (to commemorate last World Cup win). Owen Goal is pictured reading his copy ... Good to see Dandy acknowledging it's heritage - well done Maurice!!.
Just thought you UK Comics guys would want a heads-up on this one...

Crikey! This will be the first Dandy I've bought for months!
It'll give me a chance to re-evaluate my negative thoughts on their revamp!
Thanks for the tip.

Yeah, I can't wait for that issue, but I wonder what the younger audience will think of it?

But I thought England won the cup in '66?
Looking forward to this one myself, since it may well be one of the first comics I ever read as a 7-year-old.
Lovely touch!
Oh, and it's Morris, but I'm certain he'll forgive you in exchange for the publicity.

That's the era of The Dandy I grew up on so naturally I think that time for the comic was brilliant. And I don't have that particular issue they're reprinting so I'm looking forward to this.
It's a bit of a flimsy excuse to reprint though: "The issue that was on sale when England won the 1966 World Cup". I'm not complaining though. Perhaps if it's successful they'll occasionally reprint other old issues celebrating great moments in British history, such as "The issue that was on sale when that elephant ran amok in the Blue Peter studio" or "The issue that was on sale when the Sex Pistols first swore on tv".

Lets hope so Lew.....
Hope The Beano does this as well.......Classics of the comics should have a free reprint comic as well given away.....like a Sparky from the 70's..
Genie was super and wacky again........Clive was great....

I hope they don't mess about with it though, like colour the black and white strips or something.

On a related note, does anyone know how they create these reprints? For the vast majority of companies I assume all the original art of each issue would not exist... so do they scan a file copy or something?

Probably, but I think there is probably a safe place where they keep all the original art or single prints of the original art.

The issue with the reprint Dandy in isn't out until Thursday so I don't know about that, (although from the ad it looks like a scan from the actual comic) but with Classics from the Comics I imagine they reprint from a film copy of the artwork. However, DCT don't return art to artists so they may even shoot from originals although I doubt the old art would be in good enough condition to re-use now.

Bought it today in WHSmith at Liverpool Street Station - looks like it's a scan from the original issue - it's good quality though.
Only downside is that it really IS a mini-comic - 4 pages to each side of a regular Dandy page - could be a bit tricky for our aging peepers!!
Oh, and apologies to Mr Heggie for the de-Scottishisation of the spelling of his name ..
Honestly, I LOVE the idea of having a free mini-comic (or even full-size) sampler of various DC Thomson comics within the pages of Classics From The Comics - just think of it - various full reprints of Sparky, Topper, Beezer, Plug, Nutty, Cracker and of course the big two.. bliss!

DCT seem to be one of the few companies, perhaps the only one, that keep their artwork in their own archive. When I was researching the Space Patrol strip in 'The Beezer', they implied they retained all the artwork, and this is now a 40 year old strip... though in what condition, as Lew says, is conjecture...Lew Stringer wrote:Shaqui wrote:On a related note, does anyone know how they create these reprints? My biggest shock, on first visiting the offices of a weekly comic in the early 80s was the stacks of art piling up around and under the tables...I was sure some of it had been walked over at some point.
This was DCT but as I recall things were not much different at IPC.

I remember seeing bootprints on some art at Marvel UK in the late 80's although they did try to keep the artwork in drawers unless it was returned to the artists.
