Matt Smith as Dr Who
To be brutally honest, I have been dreading this as much as the news of Great news next week pals!. But my dread seems to have be in vain. After watching the first episode of the new series, Smith is as unwelcome in our house as Tom Baker. The kid was great! He makes Tom Baker look sane-ish (and that takes a lot!) I know much of it is down to scripting but if RTD and team keep this standard up, then David Tennant will very soon be a much loved memory.

RTD and his team have left the building with David Tennant. Stephen Moffatt and his writers are the new kids on the block.colcool007 wrote: if RTD and team keep this standard up, then David Tennant will very soon be a much loved memory.

Not too keen on the new score though, and that intrusive DW logo!

Re: Matt Smith as Dr Who
I thought Matt was very lively and good fun..
Like seeing the montage of all the Doctors before
also found it funny the old typewriter acting as a keyboard.....he is both old and new.also the outfit suited him..
Like the references to fairytales types..a raggity Doctor..like the sprite from Rupert the Bear..the apple reminded me of Snow White..or maybe its just me..
also a very creepy eyeball in the crack..like looking into a dollshouse..

I too thought the rejigged theme tune was a bit naff, but, as it goes, I thought it was a great episode. I am intrigued by the sneak peek of the dalek with the union jack that seems to be some sort of WW2 story 'cos Mr Churchill was there too. Some sort of parallel universe where the daleks are helping the allies maybe. I think that, as Dr Who is such a big deal again, it is unlikely that the BBC would make any mistakes. We have come a long way since the Sylvester Mccoy days. Bring it on, I always thought, even before the new series, that Dr Who was a great idea that could do no wrong if it is handled right. Ms Pond is easy on the eye too, which is a bonus!

Maybe Murray Gold had an off day. He's pretty much the only high profile person to have stayed on, they have a new Doctor, companion, producers, and head writer after all. Title sequence didn't seem to flow as well as the old one. Thunder and fire in the time tunnel? And the typeface used for Matt and Karen's names wasn't that great, awkward to read if you aren't aware of what it's supposed to say.Lew Stringer wrote:I agree.colcool007 wrote:Lew, IMHO, the new kids have done good!

The series preview at the end was interesting. Apparently when the Doctor took Amy away at the end of the episode, it was the day before her wedding. I think that will be explained in episode 7, Amy's Choice. I wonder what the story is with the Cybermen, weren't they destroyed/trapped in the Void in Doomsday and The Next Doctor? They still have the C on their chests, so it looks like it's still the parallel world version first seen in series 2.
Couldn't fault the acting from Matt and Karen, although the scene near the start when the Doctor tastes different foods was a tad cringeworthy. Peter, I agree about the typewriter, that was funny. Nice idea from the set designers. I also noticed that there's a flipcard clock in the Tardis. The Doctor always seems to like retro technology. Aren't the celebrity cameos usually in episode 12, not episode 1? Patrick Moore appeared as himself, I wasn't expecting that.
Looking forward to episode 2 now.

The flipcard clock, and the o0verhead scanner on a spring, were both first (and last) seen in the Paul McGann TV Movie, a nice touch bringing them back, I thought. This works for me, much better than the version we've had for the last few years. It just has a more authentically Doctor Who feel. And Smith and Gillan are wonderful!
Re: Matt Smith as Dr Who
I had to laugh at Matt thinking Amy was a real peeler, because the microskirt and the seamed tights were a bit of a giveaway...
Are there that many policewomen wearing skirts of any length any more? Trousers seem to have taken over completely.

I believe that the skirt is now a personal choice and to be honest, if you are honking down the High Street chasing a right villain, would you prefer a skirt or trousers? No, don't answer that. I am scared of some of the answers.AndyB wrote:I had to laugh at Matt thinking Amy was a real peeler, because the microskirt and the seamed tights were a bit of a giveaway...

However, talking of Miss Pond, I must admit that she made an 'arresting sight'!

Shes not from Yorkshire is she? I thought she was a Scot!colcool007 wrote:It doesn't hurt that Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) is from God's own country...
Loved it. I was not looking forward to the Tardis cos the radio times made it look a bit like pee wees playhouse or something but it fits right in and had some lovely touches (anyone notice the crack on the monitor? - I think its going to be the thing to follow this series ala Bad Wolf and Torchwood)
The music and titles were a let down, however I'm pretty sure the Tardis featured was the 2005-2010 tardis and it was being battered about (all the way back to 1997 or so) so perhaps we will get a different title sequence next week? I hope so, music was a bit of a let down, didnt fill me with the same buzz that the last updated music (voyage of the damned I think) did when they added more guitar and strings.
Re: Matt Smith as Dr Who
What I don't get it is why he gets a new Tardis which, just like the last one, is stuck as a traditional police box - wouldn't you think that a new tardis would have that fault fixed?
Re: Matt Smith as Dr Who
The Tardis had to rebuild itself, you're right, that should include the Chameleon Circuit. Of course the real reason is branding. The police box shape is even part of the new logo, the DW monogram.
Steve, the Tardis in the titles has the St John's Ambulance badge on it, the 2005 version of the prop didn't have that, so it's definitely the new one.

Or new/old one, as the "new" TARDIS exterior is based on the one in the Hartnell stories; St John's Ambulance badge, white window frames, and a different lantern.Digifiend wrote: Steve, the Tardis in the titles has the St John's Ambulance badge on it, the 2005 version of the prop didn't have that, so it's definitely the new one.
Basically the TARDIS has reset to 1963 factory settings, - on the outside anyway.
Re: Matt Smith as Dr Who
Dr Who got 8.3 Million viewers, which is very good, Matt Smith did well, he even sounded like David Tennant on occasions.
The Dalek eposide should be good, the Daleks seem to be helping the British in world war 2, but I really Nazi Spies.
