I got the History of the Beano book for £12.99 from Book Warehouse at Waterloo this morning. I mentioned it in another post but feel I should spread the word for anyone who never got a copy - it was hard to find.

I received a Tiger Tim's Weekly from July 1938 today. Apart from the token racist strip it looks very nice! The adventure strips - which I like best - are Chums of the Lone Cabin, The Silver Star - 'the Adventures of Two Little World Flyers,' Lonely Hearts - 'A Tale of Two Brave Chums,' and Pat the Pirate. Full of nice Thirties stylee art.
I also received issue one of D C Thomson sports comic Scoop from 1978; a classy looking weekly this, printed on very good paper for D C Thomson.

I recently got hold of some 1966 &67 Sparky's. Very old fashioned-but most enjoyable! The strip changes in Sept 1967 were as comprehensive as the Feb 1969 overhaul; the one that Sparky fans recall!
A Face unclouded by thought.

Re: What comics did you buy today?
Today i got the 1904-5 volume of Chums. It's in pretty decent condition apart from the first few pages. Lots of stuff about the Russo-Japanese war, and thus loads of short articles about Japan of those days. Only seen one fiction story about the war though... by contrast The Boys' Friend started a lengthy serial about the war almost as soon as it kicked off!
There's also an article near the start about "airships" (back then the term was used for any flying machine) suggesting that they may be used to fly passengers of ships to the shore! And also predicted thier use in war as a "way for one side to observe the movement of the other at a safe distance from the bullets", well yes just as long as the bullets aren't coming from another "airship"! (Though early in World War 1 the obeservation planes didn't nessescarily fight each other, just waved)

Re: What comics did you buy today?
I went to the Comic Mart at Bloomsbury yesterday and picked up a bound volume of the last six months of Puck from 1919. Also nine cd roms of vintage American comics including House of Secrets/Witching Hour, Marvel Comics, All Select Comics, All Star Comics, All Winners to name a few. Every issue scanned onto each disc. £10 for three titles. Also got the EC comics double cd rom which includes among the extras the whole book (400+ pages) of Seduction of the Innocent. I'll never own a single issue of these golden age comics so the cd roms are a godsend.

Sorry to rain on your parade but it might not be wise to proclaim too loudly about those pirated comics. Steps are being taken to crack down on the pirates. Most of those comics you mention are currently available to buy in book form:stevezodiac wrote:I went to the Comic Mart at Bloomsbury yesterday and picked up a bound volume of the last six months of Puck from 1919. There are loads of full colour EC comic reprints from over the last few decades, too - full runs of many titles, I think, in comic format, and easily found very cheap at marts, as well as the much more pricey recent hardback reprints.

That's right. They reprinted every EC comic about 15 years ago in monthly comic format.Raven wrote:There are loads of full colour EC comic reprints from over the last few decades, too - full runs of many titles, I think, in comic format, and easily found very cheap at marts, as well as the much more pricey recent hardback reprints.

Russ Cochran published some nice, rather deluxe (though relatively inexpensive) EC Classics albums, combining two issues each in the late 80s, then Gladstone did a load of double issues in comic size of various titles from around 1990, then Russ Cochran reprinted all the individual titles in regular comic format from around 1992. By 2000 even the 1940s EC comics, War Against Crime and Crime Patrol were coming out. Most are still very easy to find.
I have a number of 1970s reprints of individual EC comics too, brought out by East Coast Comics - I remember ordering some from America as a boy and how excited I was when they arrived - though that must have been a few years into the 80s. I think these are considerably rarer.
Do you remember these, Lew:

Re: What comics did you buy today?
Quite a nice find at the local bootsale this morning. Hurricane annuals from 1965, 67, 68, 69, 70 & 71, also a Valiant annual from 1976, the whole lot for £5.
Condition, I would say is for the most part VG+.
Just want the 1966 annual now. Would that complete the set?
Edit: Just realised it ran until 1974.

Re: What comics did you buy today?
I assume you looked here? You do indeed need 1966, 1972, 1973 and 1974 to complete the collection.

Re: What comics did you buy today?
I think the first EC reprints were the black and white hardback volumes in slipcases. I got Tales from the Crypt and Weird Fantasy. I sold the latter on ebay but still have Crypt although that will go on ebay as well - too bulky for my limited space. I have the East Coast reprints - I think there were twelve plus many of the more recent reprints. I was saying to my mate Steve last night i'd have to opt for Alfredo Alcala as my favourite horror artist over Wrightson, Ingels or Jack Davis.

There were some small paperback book collections in the Sixties, then a hardback colour collection called 'Horror Comics of the 1950s' published in the early 70s:

I think I've only seen this once - in a comic shop in Amsterdam around the late Seventies!
Then it was those East Coast Comics reprints above, then the Russ Cochran black and white hardback book box sets. Very nice collections, those.
