Mike Lacey

Does anyone if the artist Mike Lacey is still alive.

During the 70's he done loads of strips for IPC and I particulary loved his first issue covers eg- Cor!, Knockout and Shiver and Shake.

Did anyone else like his work?

It's quite likely he is still with us as I think he'd only be in his sixties. Possibly approaching 70?

When budget cuts started forcing reprints into Fleetway's last remaining humour comic Buster, I understand Mike went back into commercial artwork. (I believe he used to do engineering drawings before he broke into comics).

Often, freelancers never retire if we enjoy what we're doing, so he may still be active, albeit not in comics.

He's alive and well, and he's agreed to a Toonhound chat!

Oh, and I've just had an encounter with DC Thomson/Fleetway writer Mike Knowles.

Can't wait........Mike Lacey has done many of my favourite Fleetway stars..Bumpkin Billionaires...X Ray Specs...Sid's Snake..Shiner...
Also drawn some great covers for annuals and summer specials..

What a scoop Toonpooch!
Its also interesting reading about the writers..
a bad script with a good artist makes the good artist bad....so there is a team element. For example
Leo Baxendale and Ken Reid needed good scripts as well....
So lets remember the writers.......

My books are inaccessible at the moment (I'm the father papering the parlour - with the addition of paint everywhere too), but I'm pretty sure that Leo Baxendale (according to A Very Funny Business) ran a little scam with Mike Lacey against Fleetway. As always, I am open to correction. My memory isn't what it - what it - you know, thingy.

Leo Baxendale worked with Mike BROWN, not Mike Lacey. Mike Brown died young, apparently.

Very interesting! While the internet is stuffed to the pixels with interviews on American comics creators there's very little info about British comics folk, particularly us humourists. So it's always good to find out more behind the scenes info like this.

Well done in tracking down Mike Lacey! I look forward to reading that interview. I'm sure Mike was considered one of IPC's premier humour artists and he must have worked on almost every one of their comics! (And before that I believe he was drawing The Tiddlers on the cover of Wham! after Baxendale left).

Mike LACEY was unusual in that i can't ever remember seeing his signature in any of his vast amount of published work for I.P.C.......I personally regarded MIKE LACEY as being on par with the best D.C. Thomson cartoonists, and presumably I.P.C. felt the same way, awarding him many comic and annual covers. It took me many years even to track down his name [when i was a young buck, info on comics-creators was shrouded in mystery---the internet has changed this forever].........for me, he WAS I.P.C. in many respects.

toonpooch 2 year later......is the interview of Mike coming soon...

Mike did some great covers....for Krazy...Shiver and Shake..
he must have painted some of them as well.a very careful artist
