NO 1 Beano July 30 1938 - Advice Needed.

Hi all,

Just looking for some advice.

I've recently been given an old Beano comic - which turns out to be the above issue.

It's in pretty good condition and I don't think anyone realises that it appears to be the very first issue of the Beano and may be valuable.

Is there any way I can confirm that this is a genuine first issue or merely a replica or copy?

How were you "given it?" did someone come up to you in the pub and speak out of the side of his mouth "Want a vintage Beano, moosh? 25 sovs to you." Around here we have a chinese girl who comes in the betting shop with hooky dvds. We may scoff but perhaps he does have a genuine original.

Nobody has scoffed - just pointed him to a thread that answers his very reasonable questions quite thoroughly - and one day he may return to thank us.

But wouldn't it be great to stroll into a car boot sale where some old granny is selling a mint set of comics like this for fifty pence a bundle?

I've come across some pleasant bargains in my time. At a jumble sale a few years ago I got a brand new suit for 25p. Trousers didn't fit but jacket was superb. (No I didn't offer them twelvepence halfpenny for just the jacket).

Yes the riot police were called when they offered me the jacket for 13p but I insisted on paying 12p - they finally settled on 12p but then I blew it by asking for a carrier bag and was frogmarched out of the hall
