Has anyone noticed the incredibly high prices which is being paid for old comics on ebay?

Number one of 'LION' just fetched ? 103.

Surely this is a good argument for the production of a' best of' series

from the owners of the old ipc copywrite.

Not really. Just because a few dozen people are paying high prices for old British comics it doesn't mean there are the thousands of people you'd need to make Best of Lion viable.

Titan have tested the market with The Spider and Steel Claw volumes. If they do really well, it'll make sense to do more. If not, it's probably not worth the gamble.

Does anyone know how the Titan Steel Claw and Spider volumes have done? Bit concerned as there has been no follow-up and also I cant see that there are any further Dan Dare volumes in the pipeline from Titan either at present...

There are definitely plans to do more Dan Dare books. (As mentioned before, this website is essential to visit for British comics news: http://www.downthetubes.net/)

There will be a third Charley's War book. No idea about more Steel Claw or Spider though, sorry.

That's not really a significantly high price for the first issue of a comic that's over 50 years old and which heralded the new line of Amalgamated Press/ Fleetway adventure weeklies. (And, correct me if I'm wrong, featured the first appearance of Robot Archie.)

I have to confess that when I was a kid Archie was one of my favourites. In fact, although I used to get the Lion every week, (along with the more intellectual Eagle which was generally considered more befitting of a grammar school boy), he?s about the only character I remember. There must have been others. I know Archie was popular, but surely they wouldn?t have given him the entire comic. Anyway, we used to wonder why he had his name printed on his chest. Was it because Fleetway considered our attention spans to be so short we wouldn?t remember who he was? Some conceited individual even suggested the comic was aimed at the secondary school crowd who weren't as bright as us! The same idiot who said he would never go out with a girl from a council estate. Me, I didn't care where the girl lived. She could have lived in a cave. I don?t know who the artist was, but that was another thing that attracted me. I had a collection of old boy?s magazines and books from the 1920?s/30?s and it was similar to that style.

Lion? Nah, us secondary school council estate kids used to read Wham!, Smash! and Pow!. Lively comics wiv great anarchic characters.

I agree. Maybe one day we'll see comics on Antiques Roadshow. As for Mr Stringer...I wanted to go to a seconday school and live on a council estate. But they said I was too bloody posh!

There was a kids antiques roadshow show several years ago, which featured some old Dandy and Beano books (some I had and had binned after reading) valued at around ?50 each at the time (I've since seen some go for up to ?200 on eBay).

That would be like saying a Penny Black just sold for a million quid, surely this is a good argument for the production of a 'Pictures Of The Queen's Head' book.

Lion 1 was bought for its rarity, not its content.

Also, I've noticed that most old British comics go for incredibly low prices on eBay, having purchased a Pow! Annual for 99p and 1950's Radio Fun Annuals for less than a fiver recently. (I also find I'm usually bidding against the same half dozen people most of the time.)

Today's bargains: TV Action Annual 1974 for ?1.24 and Rainbow Annual 1951 for ?1.04. (I've no idea what artists drew the Tiger Tim stuff in Rainbow but for that price it's worth finding out.)

Although Archie appeared in the first issue of Lion in 1952 in 'Flying Saucer over Africa' drawn by Alan Philpott this was a bit of a false start as the strip ended after a few months. Archie was then revived to greater success in 1957 and in this second incarnation the artist was Ted Kearon.
