Super Mags for boys
Anybody ever come across a copy of this title before?
At least 2 issues were published in 1986, one I have seen has a lovely Ian Kennedy cover and the other one has Dennis & Gnasher on the front so I assume this is a DCT title but would be gratefult if anyone could confirm
thanks

I have both of them somewhere, but Dial up is a bugger for posting pics.
Ill have a look over the next few days and see if I can dig them out.
IIrc they were the same format as the beano specials and classics from the comics but in full colour.

So for going of target here but I recently picked up a couple of comics called "Super Mag" (not this one) that appeared in the 1960s - from "Gold Token Mags" it was American in style (a bit bigger) full colour and in the ones I had featured strips by Disney (Donald Duck and Uncle Scrooge) I think there were a few titles under the Super Mag imprint one is advertised featuring Space Control (an SF type comic) were these British? does anyone rember them, will I get my coat?

Don't remember them personally but the title you mention was actually 'Space Patrol', the UK puppet series.
Issue 1 purports the line to be a Disney spin-off (with an intro by Walt himself), and certainly several of the US Gold Key titles seem to be reprinted under this title. 'Super Mag' seems more a description (earlier issues have it, later ones don't), and the actual title which remained was 'Gold Token'. This was actually a promotional scheme, and spread across other publications by Young World (a division of Thomson International, who controlled some newspapers at the time) and also Frog Model Kits. The idea was you could cut the tokens from the comics and books to get gifts but the scheme was disbanded after a few years (possibly 1967-68 ). There is a partial listing of the Gold Token titles somewhere on the 'Space Patrol' website and if I find it, I'll post a link.

Edit: And here it is:

Thanks for this, it all rings a bell now and strangely one of the "Gold Token" mags I have is the one on your site.

The one on the left is the Ian Kennedy cover and I picked it up a couple of years ago from a car-boot sale in Wiltshire! Never seen the like before or since.rod2402 wrote:These are two I have seen. Currently in storage with the majority of my comics but well worth a read.
I started to say something sensible but my parents took over my brain!

These look as though they could be quite good! Wonder if they did Smasher from Bullet or King Cobra from Hotspur (Grant Morrison IIRC wrote some of these with Ian Kennedy drawing).

Re: Super Mages for boys
A friend of mine recently returned a copy of this comic that I lent to him - about twenty years ago, when we were at school. I'd completely forgotten it existed! I remembered i because it mentioned Wigan, my home town, and I'd never seen Wigan mentioned in a comic before. The story itself seems quite odd, it's Dennis and Gnasher in some sort of action-adventure? Perhaps the script was written for other characters, but they shoe-horned Dennis in to sell it. I dunno. I do remember thinking that 80p was a ridiculous price for a comic back then - I think The Beano was 16p.Richard S. wrote:ok, going to try and upload my first image, I'll try again if this fails...
