What comics did you buy today?

Well, I went to the Comic Mart today and got a few goodies. I had gone to hunt for Commandos, but there were none there, so I went for a pile of the weeklies. 3 Wizards, one Rover and Adventure and a big pile of early Hotspurs and Hornets from the 60's/70's. I also picked up the facsimile copy of the original Broons book and True North: Northern Exposure which is a hard copy version of a web comic.

Looking at Phil Clarke's table had me seriously tempted with pages from Look-In for sale (Danger Mouse and Inspector Gadget) and some of John Ryan's work for Princess with Lettice. And next month's mart is on my birthday so I am definitely going!

I picked up a lovely Denis Gifford book at an antiques fair on Sunday (£4, in mint condition; not bad as it cost £8.95 when it came out in 1991): Christmas Comic Posters. I hadn't seen this one before. I'm not sure why it's called 'Posters' as none of the pages are detachable, but it features lots of Christmas comic front covers from 1896 to 1941, most from the Thirties - all in whatever colours they came out in: Jingles, Playbox, Happy Days, The Dandy, The Beano, Bubbles, Funny Wonder, etc. with information on the particular comic on the reverse page.

Gifford reckons the Thirties were the never-equalled Golden Age of the Christmas comic. Many of the front page stories featured are fairly feeble as stories, but the artwork - much of it by Roy Wilson - is mostly wonderful: lots of snow-tipped letters, giant plum puddings, holly-decked borders, etc.

The only unjolly aspect is that Gifford chose some covers which contain unpleasant racial material which are published without comment, when there were presumably alternative ones available - but, then, it shows things as they really were. Oh, and the 1940 'Koko the Pup' on the cover of Magic has a surprisingly mean feel to it: "But now our pup don't feel so pleasant/ 'cos he ain't got a single present!'

This is well worth seeking out; the Roy Wilson artwork is a real treat - and it's making me wonder if Gifford put out any other excellent comic history books I'm not aware of.

It's a Roy Of The Rovers novel in a vey similar style to the Dan Dare novel I picked up a few months ago.

Not a comic, but I've just bought the paperback edition of David Bishop's Thrill-Power Overload, his glossy history of the first thirty years of 2000 AD. If it's any good it will make up for the disappointment I experienced when I got home from a trip to London about three weeks ago. I had bought a bound volume, in a pricy bookshop in Cecil Court, of what I assumed was the full year of The Champion for 1948, only to discover that there were eighteen issues missing. I decided to wait until I needed to go down again, rather than risk it in the post, so I duly got my money back last Friday, breaking my journey to the funeral of a friend in Motspur Park to do so.

Issues 21 and 22 of Spaceship Away, I also ordered 23 but I suppose that will follow, I beleive as it's self published but has changed editors it also has two "distributors"!

Also The Girl Who is Always Crying and The Penguin who Dreams of Africa (phew) by Yuri Kore, who is Korean but lives in Britain. Though she is planning to go back to Korea "soon". But then she told me that in May. And last October...
Anyway she's also a genius and her work with coloured pencils (this book is full colour) looks more like watercolours or even computer colouring, only better. It also came with a free gift, not a piece of pound shop tat but a Girl Who is Always Crying sketch book. A purpose-made, useful gift? It's like the 30's never ended!

On Tuesday, I went to Croydon to visit Forbidden Planet in the vain hope of buying the first issue of STRIP Magazine but to no avail. Instead I bought issues 1 and 11 of CLiNT.

Yesterday, I got through the post:

Spaceship Away #25 - A great Christmas number with a terrific Don Harley/Dan Dare cover. I must admit that since Part 1 (how they call their issues), SA just gets better and better.

CLiNT #12 - Nice issue. Loved the cover with Superior (and story). The Mark Millar/Dave Gibbons interview was interesting. Still reading but the only thing I didn't like so far is the Rex Royd strip.

Action - pre-ban version. Got these off eBay. Good comic.

this weeks beano & dandy, dc figurine collection 97 & Fantastic Four 600,it was 6 quid i couldn't believe it but got it anyway as i bought the last few issues when the human torch supposedly died,i was right though barely a year before he was brought back.

Got a delivery of a set of Goofy and also Plutos from eBay. It was almost a full set which was a surprise. Not bad for a tenner.

Also got Issue 3 of CLiNT.

Issue 2 of Vworp Vworp! finally arrived a few days ago (I pre-ordered it on the 10th of August!). I got to say that it is bloody brilliant, 100+ packed pages and 2 original comic strips.

I'll be definately getting issue 3 especially with an Alan Moore interview.
