Some ebay sales figures for first issues of UK comics

Victor no 1, sold Jan 3rd, 79 pounds. Couple of pages had pieces missing, plus general wear.

Someone (me) recently paid £8.35 (including P&P) for the first issue of Hoot (with free gift).

I think I paid a little bit too much but im trying to get a full run and get one fast also free gift included ups the value a bit even though I wasnt too bothered about getting it with the free gift it was just a while since i'd seen a first issue of Hoot on ebay.

It wouldnt surprise me if I have just gained the dubious honour of being the person who's paid the most for a copy of Hoot's first issue.

I think I have about six copies of Hoot 1 all with the free gift. I'm afraid I bought them to sell at a higher price at some future date - we all have to consider our retirement and build a nest egg.

Hoots Mon by Johnny and the Hurricanes. Which I have on the Decca label as well as Rocking Goose. Great stuff. Dotun Adabeyo was discussing this on Radio Five last year and actually thought it was a Moose loose aboot this Hoose until a caller put him straight by telling him it was the Scots pronunciation of Mouse. Some readers may have no idea what I am on about - they are too young.

I bought several first issues of Warlord as well. Its shameful. I think the free gift was some sort of card that you stuck foil repro war medals on.

Oh dear, you youngsters! Hoots Mon, sung by Lord Rockingham's XI, first hit the charts in the week ending October 25th 1958, at number 13 to be precise. Its positions in the next four weeks were 9, 5, 3 and 2, before it hit number 1 in the week ending November 29th 1958, where it stayed for three weeks, followed by four weeks at number 2. It dropped out of the charts in the middle of February 1959. When did Johnny and the Hurricanes record it, Steve? I have no record (no pun intended) of its existence. Was it a B side of something?

No need to reply, Steve. I've found Rocking Goose. It never made number 1 so I had obviously forgotten about it. In fact, I can't remember the melody now, so it can't have made much of an impression on me at the time, unlike others such as Red River Rock.

Sorry about that, Chief! Was Rocking Goose Johnny and the Hurricanes? I haven't checked but pretty sure they were both early 60s Decca artists. But just to prove my brain cells are fully functional here is my attempt at yesterday's Times Jumbo Cryptic crossword. 37 down is bugging me to blazes - any idea? And I think 4 down should be contemptible.



Just noticed I spelt Acerbic wrong. All done without a Dictionary or Thesaurus.

You can't complete a crossword by making up your own words - Innapetence, indeed. Kindly step into this busy main road...opens door - screech of brakes. Look its got a squiggly red line under it so not recognised.

I don't have a dictionary here so can't check the veracity of that fanciful dicky bird. I'll google a dictionary instead - the wonder of computers.

Lack of Appetite - that seems right. But not something I've ever suffered from hence the lack of recognicity.
