Comics on TV

The spinners I saw in my village had mostly DC comics; Alan Class comics were generally piled in a corner on the bottom shelf - even the newsagent thought they were cheap products!

Does anyone remember that day in the early 70s when some early 60s Marvels turned up? They were obviously a warehouse find that were just shipped out. All I now remember is that Journey into Mystery Thor Annual (#1)where he's fighting Hercules on the cover in mint condition for the usual 2/6d(?). I'd already read the contents in B&W in Fantastic, but I wasn't complaining!

Oh and BTW, did her majesty really want to buy a Vesta SpagBol?

Another old British film, this time Too Many Crooks, 1959. As is often the case in the media, the dim character (played in this case by Bernard Bresslaw) is the one reading comics.

Here's Rodney reading a comic in an episode of Only Fools And Horses (Season 4, episode 3 "Hole in One"). Filmed in early 1985, but from the advert on the back (the new Ultra-Modern Cadillack for 1979) it's a few years old. Anyone recognise it?

Ah found it after a bit of a search, looks like it's "Giant Cracked Fun-Kit", an american comic/magazine. Never heard of it myself, but it seems like it ran for a long time.

EDIT - whoops, PaulTwist beat me to it You can't tell which issue it is, but i think, from the advert on the back, it must be from 78/79. This is a later issue with the same sort of logo

Cracked has now been recreated as a humour website at www.cracked.com, though it claims the heritage of the magazine and so has been "running" since 1958, making it the only website to pre-date the internet!

Cracked featured a great deal of John Severin art during the 6os and 70s. A rival to Mad and Sick magazines.

Last night's episode of Castle on Alibi had a story centred round a vigilante "superhero" and scenes in a comic shop. Lots of stuff to try and identify. But in one scene, amongst other Marvel titles, was a copy of Avengers #1.

On Empire on Monday they showed copies of a few story papers of that era, including a Boys' Own Annual (looked 19th century) and a monthly issue of Chums from probably the 1890's - 1900's.

BBC 1 or 2 I think, it's on Monday at 9. Oh and it's a documentary about the Empire, that episode was about "imperial heroes" of fact and fiction.

The family on Cowboy Trap on BBC1 this morning apparently likes comics - I saw several annuals on a shelf in a wall unit. Couldn't identify most of them (you could only see the spines) but a couple of them had late 1980s dates (one was definitely 1989) and there was a copy of Beano and Dandy: Favourites from the 40's.
