Danny & Katey story from 15 years ago

Post by TwoHeadedBoy »

Just to help on my blog a little bit, anyone know who did this? Probably a really easy question for a lot of people here!

I was thinking Ken Harrison or David Parkins, but it could well be neither of those!

That strip looks rather like David Parkins to me, but I might be wrong. I think he was Dan's main artist for a while in the 1990s so it would make sense. The artwork looks more like the slightly refined style he used on Dennis the Menace, rather than that of his Billy Whizz and Fred's Bed which both looked a bit 'wackier'.

I know one easy way to answer this - anyone got The Art and History of The Dandy handy?

It looks like David Parkins to me, especially in the 'action' scenes.

Definitely David Parkins, who was the principal Desperate Dan artist in the mid-90s. He's also been known to post on this forum!

Bingo! Cheers for that then - seems my initial suspicions were true.

Tell you what though; the Katie drawings in frames 4, 5 and 6 would certainly pass for Harrison works at this range----they're so 'true' they could almost have been photoshopped in [they haven't]!

I think you're going to be very shocked by "the Art and History of the Dandy" index when you see it, Digifiend, if you're expecting an index up to the level of one in the "History of the Beano". After repeating the information from Ray Moore's index, from 1985 onward it's just a list of new strips with start date (no end date or artist credit), omitting "one-offs" such as this. There's a separate list of "some artists since 1985".
It's a pity, but then I'm glad the book exists at all when most of us thought it would never materialise.
Is it weird to have no interest in keeping or collecting free gifts?

They omitted the end dates? That's lazy, they had FIVE YEARS to plan this, since it was originally planned to come out in 2007 but got cancelled. You'd be right that I'll be disappointed. Maybe making an online addendum would be a good idea... trouble is, I only have a few issues prior to 2010.

That's from the Dandy's 60th birthday issue back in 97
