Phoenix, re. the "grave" accent, I can do it too. "à".
There is a languages option available, with spell check. It's either from Yahoo or Firefox but I'm sure there are similar wee add ons from other browsers or explorers. They only do so much though and French words such as "a" or des" which can have an accent or not, depending on meaning, don't necessarily show that corrections are needed. For a noun such as "la journee", the checker offers the correction of "la journée". Similarly "pres" will offer the correction of "près" or "prés"
From what I did with "à", given the limits of the French spellcheck I have, you will have deduced that I cheated and looked up "à" on my browser and copied it in.
I have French and Italian installed.
I'm sure some of the others will have other systems or tricks and I'd be interested to learn them.

If that doesn't work, the forum's own spell check should sort it for you.

Ever the humorist, Raven! Thank you for your comments anyway, of course, but as far as I'm aware, I don't have any French accents on my Logitech MK320 keyboard. I certainly can't see any. There is a tilde, which is often needed in Spanish to sit on a letter 'n', but when I experimented it appeared in front of, or behind, the 'n' as if it were another letter. Thank you too, Paw, for your suggestions. I've never used a spell checker, other than the Oxford English Dictionary, so I don't even know where they are. I have rung a friend who is far more computer literate than I, and he is going to get back to me when his bus gets him home.

I've just picked up a near complete run of Hoot (only seven missing), a dozen issues of Champ and about 350 assorted Beano and Dandy for next to nothing. Never read Hoot before. I'm rather glad I went out, today.

I've never used a spell checker, other than the Oxford English Dictionary, so I don't even know where they are.

If I type a word wrongly on here, a red line appears underneath it. If I then right-click on the word, the correct spelling can be chosen to replace it. This happens for me if I type clientèle without the accent. Maybe I set this as a preference when choosing my board settings, though I don't recall doing so.

I only use the spellcheck in the direst of emergencies.

On a Windows keyboard, you will get all sorts of accents if you hold down the alt button and select the right other button - experiment! They are also available in MS Office under Special Characters.

I'm too busy to experiment. I just needed to be told what to do. My computer-literate friend emailed me two sheets, one showing how to get French accents, the other for the Spanish ones. They both involve activating the NumLock, holding down the Alt key and typing three specific numbers from a list, depending on what letter and accent you want. I wish I'd known about this years ago, it would have made setting my departmental exams a lot quicker.

My Australian keyboard (that is made in China) has a button on it that says 'g'day cobber', I do not use that often in case it confuses some!

Or, possibly even quicker, you could just copy and paste the word from a website that has it with the accent!

You can also go to Start > Accessories > Character Map and choose from the list on there. Not all fonts have all characters displayed, but if you copy them from a font that does, then paste them, they usually work "anyway". はい
