What comics DIDN'T you buy today?

I found a Vintage Magazine Emporium, which has various magazines from different decades 'framed' on cardboard backing with clingfilm. There was a surprising amount of Eagle in the 50's and 60's sections, but they wanted £15 EACH(!) for them, so I strolled away.

That will have been the Vintage Magazine Shop in Brewer Street, Soho. I've mentioned them a number of times in the past. I have never found their items to be reasonably priced, but now, because of the way they are packaging them, we can't even look through the pages of any one of the comics or magazines without asking permission. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that at some point Vinmag decided to change the comics/magazines presentation in their cellar to match that of the ground floor, which, in my opinion, is unashamedly aimed at tourists. 30th Century protect their comics in the same way, of course, but they are there for genuine collectors. I never had that Vinmag problem with any other comic shop when I was putting my collection of boys' papers together. Not only that, I was left to my own devices to root through piles of story papers for as long as I needed at Norman Shaw's, Robin Osborne's Flip's Pages, The Book Palace in Gipsy Hill etc, and I was never made to feel as though I was being watched in case I knocked off a couple of Adventures or Buntys while the proprietor was elsewhere. Downstairs at Vinmag I feel eyes boring into me all the time. I still go, though, from time to time, because they may just have something I really need that I haven't found anywhere else, at which point I would have to decide whether I could grit my teeth long enough to hand over the £15, as a one off. I certainly wouldn't manage £30 as a two off.

In one of those discount book shops at Waterloo yesterday I saw they had a book called Fire and Water - Bill Everett and the beginnings of Marvel Comics (or something like that). I don't have the space to buy those large format books anymore so passed it up. In Lewisham today in The Works they had some graphic novels including a Fantastic Four one which had a previously unpublished Jack Kirby story in pencils form. They also had a few of those large DC/Marvel encyclopaedias. I went to the comic fair yesterday but just bought three dvds.

Yeah, I saw those encyclopedias in The Works last week. I also saw the Classic Beano and Dandy Celebrate Dennis the Menace book. Didn't buy it of course, because I already have it.

To be fair to Vinmag, while their prices for humdrum issues of comics can be very high, their prices on key issues aren't much higher, so it all balances out if you're lucky enough to catch them when a new run of a title comes in.

Just been to the lazy bones bootie saw some stalls with 70s/80s us marvel comics the usual naff titles wanting silly oot prices did see a stall full of 40s and 50s mags had a number of sexton blakes mags for a quid each , I have never read the ones I have got so I left them , did put up a book of 50s space comic covers postcards and a blur lagoon puzzle ( not the remake ) looks 50s.

I've been trying to get hold of the recent Commando issue Operation Nachthexen, but having had no luck finding it locally, I am informed by the Commando website that there isn't a shop that stocks Commando within 50 miles of me and they won't send me a single issue, only sign me up for a year's worth. So, much as I'd like to buy a new British comic for a change, nobody will sell it to me.

I've been trying to get hold of the recent Commando issue Operation Nachthexen, but having had no luck finding it locally, I am informed by the Commando website that there isn't a shop that stocks Commando within 50 miles of me and they won't send me a single issue, only sign me up for a year's worth. So, much as I'd like to buy a new British comic for a change, nobody will sell it to me.

I went to the shops today to see if I could get it and post it to you but that issue wasn't there (another four were). Is it coming up or just been?

I'd rather not have to pay more than double the cover price (postage brings it up to £3.75) while it's still allegedly in the shops.

I don't know if I'm being obtuse, but the link you kindly provided appears to only offer me a yearly subscription for £61. Ditto the D.C. Thomson shop.

No one appears interested in selling me a single issue. Even the digital edition seems to be a minimum of a month's worth of issues. I've never been unable to buy a single current digital issue of a comic before.

I sent them an email at the Commando website, so maybe they can help. I'm just a little boggled about how difficult they are making it for me to buy their stuff.

UPDATE: Those nice people at DCT got back to me within a couple of hours, and I was able to order the issue for the princely sum of £2.50 including postage. Yay!

I believe it was published a couple of weeks ago. So it's probably just been superseded by the next set of issues.

Yeah, they publish four issues every two weeks.

With Newsstand you can buy one issue or a full year. but it would not be of much use now as the issue was probably no longer on sale.

Its a brilliant Commando book and has got me buying them again...also the character Yana will be in another adventure in the future..found out on facebook..so very good news...
the story had me on the edge of my seat and boy those Women were tough as men!!

Weren't there some female Russian pilots in Battle's 'Johnny Red' series - or did I imagine it?
