I got my copy on vinyl in 1971 from NEMS. I seem to remember it was pretty good. Only 6 songs on side 2 though, what a swizz!

There'll be no more HMV closures. They were rescued by Hilco a few days ago.

HMV has been rescued, but when I looked in the reprived Stockport & Manchester shops - still selling the same old stuff/boxed sets the supermarkets & secondhand shops are selling cheaper.

Never learn do they? Many of the shoppers like me & others I've seen are the specialists, looking for the more obscure films never on terrestial TV & old TV shows that are better than today's stuff.

Went to HMV Oxford Street yesterday and came out empty handed. Intended to get the 70s tv series Angels but they didn't have it. Hardly any vintage tv sets at all. I finally decided to go downstairs and look at the UK Subs cds but there wasn't a single cd by them. No Procol Harum either and no Neil Young dvds. It seems they only stock stuff from about 1999 onwards now. Looked for the Invaders tv series as well but they haven't had that for months. No Mission Impossible sets no Rawhide sets. A waste of a morning.

I will be in London again in about three weeks or so but, in the light of Steve's comments, I can't see the point of another visit to HMV. Perhaps a year down the line if they manage to get real. Whether we like it or not, and I don't very much, Amazon and other online markets are the future. Just sitting at my computer this morning, I bought the full run of Blakes 7, the four series separately rather than the cheaper imported Dutch boxed set, about which there are several warnings on the Amazon site. Also, thanks to having my memory jogged by DavidKW in a post on the Retro TV thread, I bought The Owl Service. I can't imagine HMV having those in their current state of undress.

My mate, Steve has kept urging me to buy Ace of Wands but that is also no longer in stock. I've seen bits on youtube and it looked a bit cheesey. But if people are no longer buying cds and dvds it must be difficult for HMV to maintain a presence in the high street. DVD box sets seemed a great idea several years back but nowadays you could probably get an entire season of a series onto a mini sd card or a USB flash drive. Much easier to store in terms of space. When I buy a cd i throw away the plastic jewel case and put it into a plastic cd wallet. They are then stores in alphabetical order in those cd storage boxes you can get from poundstretcher etc.

Sadly the internet will be the future - though I do not trust the net & never buy off it - not safe.

WH Smith have started to sell DVDs again, but they also just stock the usual suspects & not go with the more profitable specialists.

On the high street front, the only future is an independent chain to be set up, specialising in the collectors' gap in market for those who like the persobnal touch & distrust the net.

Any indepenedent record and DVD shops exisiting now are the best future bet - so thankful that I'm living where there are a few - be frustrating if not.

X Records in Bolton (and I bought an annual there too) and Malcolm's Musicland in Chorley (got a Man In A Suitcase dvd there far cheaper than I would've paid in HMV) are great places for speciialists' DVDs and Cds.

I now buy most of my dvd box sets at the comic fair where they sell a lot of region 1 sets as well.

Completely off topic, and purely coincidentally, my father was born in Bolton and my mother came from Chorley, where they met. They were both very musical too. Feel free to ignore this post.

There was a piece in yesterday's papers about HMV having no Beatles cds. Something to do with a change of record labels. My problem is having to scour the whole TV section to find a title - I think they should categorise them more. They have sci-fi in its own section but perhaps they could have a vintage tv section - say pre 1990. I realise some shows may have started in the 70s and still be around in the 90s. I have no interest in modern stuff except for Person of Interest, NCIS and CSI - so how about tv crime, tv comedy etc? (Yes I know NCIS can come under both of those) - loved the palm slap between David McCallum and Jamie Lee Curtis last night. And Tony DiNozzo's nod to Ziva David using the word "Cahoots" I laughed out loud.

Back to HMV - the one at Canary Wharf is like Groucho's cabin in "A Night At The Opera?" Grouch to steward: "Tomorrow you can take the trunk out and i'll go in." There is hardly room to move in there - I've been there a few times but usually walk out in exasperation at the cramped conditions.

I agree. I've been there a good few times, although not since my son Andrew relocated from New Providence Wharf to be nearer his girlfriend. I particularly remember the narrowness of the aisles. Two people couldn't pass comfortably, one of them had to turn sideways. It was irritating.
