If we had a list of the 100 greatest serials in girls comics

I seem to remember there was another series where a girl went to a boys' school disguised as her twin brother.

How can you be so sure?Tammyfan wrote:Cuckoo in the Nest from Tammy will have to be in. The only story in girls's comics where the protagonist is not only a boy, but he has to pose as a girl!

You are thinking of Tammy Smart's Schooldays, Phil, where she had to try to remain undetected at a boys' school. It was in TRACY in 1979, and this topic was dealt with some years ago in the Looking For Judy Comics From The Early 80s thread.philcom55 wrote:I seem to remember there was another series where a girl went to a boys' school disguised as her twin brother.
Re: If we had a list of the 100 greatest serials in girls co
Yep. I can be 100% sure. The chances of female impersonations occurring elsewhere in girls' comics are virtually zero because the appearance of male protagonists was infrequent and peripheral. Even if they had, it would have been on the periphery or drag acts and not central to the story as was the case here.Phoenix wrote:How can you be so sure?Tammyfan wrote:Cuckoo in the Nest from Tammy will have to be in. Okay, now, do you have any picks for the list?
Re: If we had a list of the 100 greatest serials in girls co
No you can't. The only way you can be 100% sure is if you have read all the serials in all the story papers for girls published between the first issue of School Friend in 1950 and the last issue of Bunty in 2001, and not found any more examples, something you clearly haven't done. I don't know either whether there are any more or not because there are many hundreds of issues of story papers for girls that I haven't read either.Tammyfan wrote:Yep. I can be 100% sure.
You are even undermining your own point here by allowing for one or more possible female impersonation stories.Tammyfan wrote:The chances of female impersonations occurring elsewhere in girls' comics are virtually zero.
How do you know? You are just indulging in speculation here, not facts.Tammyfan wrote:Even if they had, it would have been on the periphery or drag acts and not central to the story as was the case here.

If we can go back to our main topic, here are some other possibles:
Fran'll Fix It! (Jinty)
Kathy of Marvin Grange (June)
The Button Box (Tammy)
The Strangest Stories Ever Told (School Friend, June, Tammy)
Fran of the Floods (Jinty)
Moonchild (Misty)

Kitty Hawke (Girl)
Pam of Pond Hill (Jinty)
Sue Spiker (Emma)
Jane, Model Miss (Diana)
Anna, Junior Miss/ Girl with the Golden Smile (Judy)
The Dancing Life of Moira Kent (Bunty)
Luv Lisa (Bunty) - not really a fan of photo stories but I think this is the one exception and it's well remembered

I think there should be some different categories:
Best one-off seirals - ie episodic adventure seiral but is only time & advenure said characters appear - scu as Balloon of Doom or Moonchild.
Humour/one new adventure every week - such as Bessie Bunter & Vanessa From Venus (though I think both of these could've had a few 2-5 part advenuture serials).
Then there's those that ran for years in assorted adventures of assorted lengths - like Lucky's Living Doll or Bella At The Bar.
Some others I've not seen mentioned yet
The Cat Girl (Sally)
Cherry & The Children (Girls Crystal/Schoolfriend/June)
Diana's Diary (June)
Trixies Treasure Chest (Debbie)

Oddly enough some of the best series in girls' comics would have been just as much at home in a boys' title. 'The Man From UNCLE', 'the Avengers' and 'El Cid' for example.

Just seen we've had Trixie.
Here's some more anyway:
Jane Bond (Princess Tina)
Chairman Cherry (Princess Tina)
My Schoolfriend Sara/My Friend Sara (Schoolfriend/June (briefly - should've been longer)
Maisie's Magic Eye (Sally)
Kathy Of Marvin Grange (June)
Jeanie & Her Uncle Meanie (Sandie/Tammy)
Girls From NOODLES (Diana)
Mini Mum (Bunty) (was this a regular strip? Think so).
I once did try to write a top 30 of fave UK comic strips (all genres); inspired by seeing parallel world top 30 TOTP rundowns on You Tube (top 30 of kids' tv characters/Dr Who/people who should've had hit records).
I'm now driven to write one for girls' strips I currently like - Lucky's Living Doll & The Happy Days predicted certs.

Re: If we had a list of the 100 greatest serials in girls co
Nothing Ever Goes Right! (Judy) One of the most tortured heroines in girls' comics and she doesn't even get a happy ending.
Re: If we had a list of the 100 greatest serials in girls co
It's getting hard to remember what's already been suggested, but I don't think we've had these:
Jill Crusoe
Uncle Lionel
Mary Jo
Alona
Westward the Wagons
Moira, Slave girl of Rome
Alice in Spaceland
The Land of Nowhere
Lady Penelope
Black Velvet
Daughter of Lorna Doone
The Sentinels
And what about some of the outstanding literary adaptations like 'Black Beauty', 'The Secret Garden', 'The Woman in White', 'Wuthering Heights' - or historical biographies such as 'Joan of Arc'?
Part of the problem is that, while certain strips have an unarguable claim to greatness, some of the others that are being suggested won't even have been seen by most of us. Over time perhaps it'd be a good idea for people to explain why they think their nominations belong in the top 100 - backing this up with examples wherever possible?
Or maybe we should begin by trying to establish the top 10 all-time, indisputable greats? For example, I don't think anybody could argue against the importance of the Four Marys and the Happy Days - that just leaves eight to go!

I think one criteria should be that the serial has run for at least a year.philcom55 wrote: Part of the problem is that, while certain strips have an unarguable claim to greatness, some of the others that are being suggested won't even have been seen by most of us. I based the picks from 'Girl' comic on a few things, that they had run for over a year so were popular with readers at the time, three of them had appeared on the front cover, and most of them had appeared in their own books, annuals etc.
Here is the cover of the 'Calling Nurse Abbott!' annual.
Re: If we had a list of the 100 greatest serials in girls co
You will just have to have a private poll all of your own, matrix, if you are going to insist that our choices are subject to that criterion. It would rule out virtually every DC Thomson serial, and most from every other company, I imagine.matrix wrote:I think one criteria should be that the serial has run for at least a year.
Re: If we had a list of the 100 greatest serials in girls co
Life's a Ball for Nadine (Jinty). Arguably the only girls' serial to have a coloured girl as the star of the show - and in the title.
