If we had a list of the 100 greatest serials in girls comics

Discuss all the girls comics that have appeared over the years. Excellent titles like Bunty, Misty, Spellbound, Tammy and June, amongst many others, can all be remembered here.

Tammyfan, the two 'Bunty: Golden Age Classic Stories' contain images of covers, 'headers' of stories that appeared in the comic, Bunty Club corner pages, features etc, the only complete stories in them are from the annuals. The Girl comic I was referring to was the original 1951-64 one. Sorry for any confusion.

Yes, know the ones you are talking about now. I got confused because Bunty produced a short-lived monthly shortly after her demise, and I would like to have known what she reprinted. I still enjoy reading my copies of the Golden Classics. Pity they didn't produce more.

To come back to the list, I think A Song for Andrella (Mirabelle) will have to go. The list is for girls' strips and Mirabell was a romance comic.

To be honest I only included 'Song for Andrella' to add variety; I've only seen a couple of episodes myself so I don't have any strong feelings about it. On the other hand I'm a little wary about excluding all 'romance' comics as many titles that would appear to come under that heading (Mirabelle, Pink, the second Girl, the second Tina, etc.) also carried strips like 'Patty's World', while some long-running comics such as Diana gradually evolved into Jackie lookalikes.

But we have to think carefully about some of these entries. We only have 100 slots and now we have to do some weeding as we have gone over and there may be more suggestions to come.

Maybe an alternative to weeding would be to decide on which nominations merit progression to the next level instead? This would allow people to argue the pros and cons of their own favoured suggestions (preferably with representative extracts) following which all interested parties could arrive at a group decision.

On romance comics like Jackie I do agree that 99% of the contents would almost certainly be unsuitable anyway, but rather than having a blanket ban my own feeling is that each strip should be allowed to stand on its own merits - regardless of where it appeared. This might even allow something like 'Halo Jones' (possibly the single best girls' comic strip ever) to be considered, even though it didn't appear in a comic that was aimed specifically at girls.

I am thinking of withdrawing one of my suggestions, Tansy of Jubilee Street. She was the most lasting strip from Penny, but I'm not sure that makes her strong enough for a greatest list.

If we consider publications like Pink, then we'd better have Sugar Jones on the list.

Sounds okay to me. If others agree, we could have a closing off time for suggestions and then consider what we have. And where did Halo Jones appear, anyway?

I haven't seen enough episodes of this series to say whether it deserves to be one of the 100 Greatest but I must admit that Sugar is an intriguing character. Do you know anything about her mysterious background Tammyfan?

In case anybody's interested I've just posted a brief extract from 'Sugar Jones' along with some other Pink strips on this thread:

Well, Sugar Jones is the one everyone remembers from Pink. She can be nominated for now and we can decide on her later.

Yes, I know a bit about Sugar. She wears a wig to hide that she is older than she looks.

I've put the new suggestions into the list of nominations, and the number is now 115.

Here's a few more of my personal favourites:

The Many Faces of Moppet (Mandy) - a strange doll is able to influence a girl's mood
Strange Neighbours (M&J) - there is something unusual with the new neighbours and turns out they are a lot older than they look.
The Secret World of Sally Maxwell (Misty) - a girl gains telepathic powers
The Locked Room (Judy) - a girl's family are taken over by aliens.
Viva Marisa (Emma) - I only recently got a collection of Emmas and I enjoyed this story about a girl who joins a revolution to overthrow a cruel dictator.

I think there should be a rule that serials (I mean serials) for the list should be be that can be described in their entirety and not based on a few odd episodes you have. I have serials that had me hooked, but the ending had me want to scream because it was so ill-conceived and stupid. Examples are Foul Play (Tammy), Distant Cousin (Bunty) and Donna Must Dance (Bunty).

I agree that lame endings must be taken into account, but perhaps they shouldn't automatically disqualify a serial. Personally I found the conclusion of 'The Balloon of Doom' to be a big let down, but that doesn't detract from the overall impression that series left in so many people's minds.
