The Dandy and The Beano - Classic Christmas Comic Covers

Yes Lew I have sometimes noticed the world-famous STRINGER moniker proudly eblazoned in some of your items, including some 60s Odhams examples.

It must be great actually holding the selfsame paper comic you actually bought brand new in your childhood: an actual link to being young again, even if everything else in the world [including our waistlines and hairlines!] is quite different.

Sadly I was unable to hang onto a single 'original' from the first-time-around, it would have been very difficult to keep them seperate in good condition, as I had a lot of younger siblings who doubtless would have been attracted to a pile of comics, while I was out climbing trees or whatever....


......in fact, I very rarely saw any of the original stuff ever again until the early 90s, when I started seeking it out at book fairs, etc--- even 20 years ago, it was a world away from today, where you can see endless vintage material with a few mouse-clicks.

We also had a guy who used to come round the doors with stacks of comics in a pram and he used to do a swap with your 'finished' [or read] comics----this sounds like something out of the 1930s now, not the early 70s, but actually he done a roaring trade, this young entrpeneur.


I used his free swap service a lot-----I'm trying to imagine your response if he turned up at the Stringer household in 1970:

Lew of 1970:

' 1973 is in the far future, that's no good to me now, chum. Sorry , mate, all my comics are permanently kept in boxes in me cupboard, I will need them for me future blog'.

I did actually swap and exchange comics at the local bookstall on Saturday mornings, but they only accepted American comics.

Quite a few of my comics have my address at the top from the late sixties early seventies, my mum still lives there and it is my ebay address for deliveries as she is always there to accept packages. That has never had a doorbell either in 55 years of residency. We used to have the doorkey on a piece of string to save us knocking as kids. But at dinner times if my mum was at work I had to climb in through the coal hole. Wot larks.

----same here, Lew! We did have a 'phone though [as far back as 1967, --pretty rare at that time on a council estate------as my dad worked for himself]---we were never rich though....not that that accounts for everything!

We didn't have a 'phone installed until late 1975. Tell that to the kids of today and... well, they probably won't be listening because they're too busy texting their mates.

Blimey. We had a phone installed in our council house in 1962! It was red (which distressed my mum for years- she wanted 'ivory', as Elsie Tanner had a red one, and we all knew about HER) and I never got used to the bell! Why did we get it? My mum was one of 5 sisters...
