What comics did you buy today?

Got this a few days ago. 99p from the Salvation Army.



I'm calling 'research' for my own girls' comic. Enjoying it very much and missing old-school art such as this contains.

Got a bunch of Champs, Spikes and a few Victors. Spike was better than I remembered. Might get a few more of these. This was my first Champ. Pleasant enough.

Just took delivery of my first batch of Commandos that I have bought through Facebook. 30 of them ranging from Phantom Frogmen (issue 233) up to somewhere in the 1400's.

I have now realised that 1978 is probably my favourite year for Commando. There are just so many good comics from that year's batch.

Managed to complete the year 2007 but still desperately looking for issues of the "Dandy Xtreme" from 2008, 2009 and 2010.

I had a couple of days off this week and had a sort out. I filled a large bag with Commando comics which I will eventually sell on ebay in batches of ten or a dozen. I subscribed for a few years and am alarmed at how many I accumulated. They are in near mint condition. I'll be keeping my Battle and War Picture libraries though, I have many early numbers including nos 1 and 2 of Battle PL.

Wow, looks like you'll have a job looking for Xtreme issues! Thought there'd be plenty so've just looked on eBay out of curiosity - nothing!

Wow, looks like you'll have a job looking for Xtreme issues! Thought there'd be plenty so've just looked on eBay out of curiosity - nothing!

Or just the opposite perhaps, which is why they're not selling them?

I have seen some on eBay in the past but there won't be a nostalgia market for them yet so they're not going to sell that well. Same as any comics from the last ten years. The people who bought them will still be children, just about, so some might be keeping them for a while.

Spike, Buddy and The Crunch were all decent efforts. They could have done with some Fleetway flair though. Don't have a schoolboy as the editor, have an alien. Mind you, these all lasted (incredibly) more than the excellent Tornado and Star*Lord, so maybe DCT was correct in retaining the more childish aspects?

I'd imagine Thomson's overheads were considerably lower than IPC for various reasons such as owning their own print works. (Didn't they distribute their own publications as well?) So that would help in keeping the comics going a bit longer.

I bought a complete run of Crunch recently and I'm enjoying it much more than I did when I was 19. (I gave up after 6 issues back then.) I'm seeing it in a different way now though of course.

Yes, Spike and Buddy were also good comics. Again, I didn't appreciate them so much back then, but in hindsight they certainly had their merits. I bought a year's worth of Buddy recently too. Unfortunately "good for their age" meant food stains and tears on some issues, and all of them stinking of cigarettes. The issues of Crunch, from a different seller, are in excellent condition though.

I also bought a good run of Warlord a short while ago to see if my prejudice against war comics could be changed. Haven't read them yet but I like the way the presentation of the comic was more exciting than, say, Victor's rigid page designs.

Agree about Spike and Buddy being aimed for the younger market, but I always thought that The Crunch was a little more mature.

I agree, The Crunch was. I guess that was the follow-on from Bullet. Shame these are so under-rated.

Warlord was great. It really moved war comics on. Not quite as grim'n'gritty as Battle but it's a good blend between hard action and DCT's stiff upper-lip. Maybe being war-based will be too much for you, Lew, but if anything can change your mind...

I would recommend Kampfgruppe Falken as Warlord's Charley's War. Taken from the German side, it's an about turn from many war comics, with the Siberian weather a major factor.

Lot's of good 'uns though. There was the trapper in Northern Canada/Alaska (sorry, the name escapes me), Green's Grudge War, the Rats (or was it Mice?) of Torbruk being excellent, as well as good, but more traditional action, of Stryker and Union Jack Jackson. For me, I could never stand air action. Even with Johnny Red, I turned the pages quickly.

Anyone else got recommendations from these comics?

Canuck King is the Canadian that you are thinking of. And it was The Rats of Tobruk

You missed Holocaust Squadron, Wolverine, Rayker, Killer Kane, Sniper and Spider Wells. Not that I read Warlord that much....
