Ebay is often used as a price guide by people selling elsewhere.therefore if a dealer asks £75 even though it doesn't sell someone takes this price as the norm.Playing around with prices on Ebay does effect prices outside the Ebay box.

Surely not. Why would they? The price asked and/or realised on any particular item in any particular auction at any particular time is just that. It's not a norm. People who believe that it is are deluded. There is, of course, no reason whatsoever why a seller shouldn't ask a high price for one of his/her items. They would argue that they can always reduce it if it doesn't sell, but eventually the penny will drop that nobody is going to buy it.

People are impressed with high prices. If an Ebay dealer wants £130 for a comic some casual observer may think that this must be an accurate evaluation and when he finds a similar comic will offer it at a lower price but quote Ebay.I wonder whether charity shops troll Ebay when pricing ,that would account for some of the high prices on so called collectable items.I've noticed in some charity shops that old books mean valuable books which of course is not the case.

I think they do. I remember seeing a vintage film annual or two in a charity shop a while back - the type you see priced at around four or five pounds at film fairs and which never seem to sell - priced at some ridiculous £twentysomething-type price, with something like: 'Online price: £60!" written underneath. They'd obviously found someone trying to sell at that price. Others might be trying to sell one at 99p.

Even on this forum, I think, people have mentioned things now "going for" a certain high price on eBay, but they're not "going for" it because they're not selling. Some people do seem to assume it must be the going rate.

If they are not trawling through Ebay, then they certainly are looking at Amazon or one of the other book selling sites. I have seen a number of charity shops where the prices very closely align with a web-site or three...

Sorry to hear about your reaction, Hen Broon; I know i'm the villain of the piece at this moment but, please, consider this scenario that I confronted yesterday evening. There was a series of issues of a title that I was interested in last evening on ebay. Two issues had captured my attention; one problem was that there was only one that was offered in high grade, the other was in moderate condition. With further investigation, I discovered that a certain bidder had bid twice on both items. Come the hour, I exploited the bidder's highest bid on the one that I wasn't keen on in order to outbid him/her on the one I did want. I won. That's experience. I know I was rather bullish on my last post on this subject for which I apologize (too much cider, i'm afraid) but I don't apologize over my overall argument: if ebay bidders are prepared to bid twice on an item without a bid in return, they shouldn't be surprised if they find themselves exploited. Seriously, you do need experience on ebay if you're bidding... actually, i'm surprised no one has created a business that offers "know-how" on how to bid on ebay... or has one done so, already?

I can't beleve you are still boasting about bidding fellow collectors up just because you think they are not as smart as you,to me this makes you a bully, are you a bully is that how you get through the day.
I don't care what excuse you use this is a dirty habit.
Your problem now is everone is checking who is bidding against them and every time you bid on somthing and don't win the winning bidder will think you were bidding him up and you will do it to the wrong person and it will come back and bite you.

Al , colcool007 and AndyB
I apolagise if i have offended or upset anyone but i think phoenix and geoff42 were needing called out on this bidding collectors up for there amusement and i an shocked and disappointed that nothing was said from you, or do you think this is an ok way to behave on your site.

I have said all i am going to say on subject.

Hen, this is a forum where we expect people to debate. We neither condemn nor condone practices on other sites. But we do draw a line when people are breaching copyright laws or any other legal instrument.

Our own views on bidding practices by others on auction sites adds no value to the debate. And while people are respectful of each other, we are content to allow free and open debate.

I have made my views clear in that I bid what I can afford and if that works then brilliant. But if it doesn't then there is always the next comic to consider. And considering how many comics I collect, there is rarely one that got away except for the Victor Summer Special 1967 or Action No 37 dated 23 Oct 1976....

I don't think it's bullying in any shape or form but I agree with you that it's nothing to boast about. It will backfire eventually Hen. Either eBay will get wise to the shill bidding and take action or the bidders they target (one of which I know reads this forum) will play them at their own game and they'll be stuck with fees to pay on items they don't want. Let it go. It's certainly been an eye opener that's for sure.

I only bid on items that I want and, if it means exploitation, I will do it. I'm never left with an item that I never wanted. I maybe left with a lesser grade than expected, but I can roll with that. Again, I make no apology for this practice if the opportunity arises. I don't see anything that conjures up the image of "bullying"... that accusation baffles me. Exploitation, yes. And, Ebay can't make a law against a bidder's naivety. If you bid twice on an item without competition, don't cry if you are shafted. It's nothing to do with shilling... I can see the resemblance... but, in the end, one has to accept one's own responsibility when bidding. Nothing is fair in life, not even in love and war.

The one that I have not bought today is the Victor 1967 Summer Special as it has risen out of my financial reach and I can't justify spending more pounds on it than it has pages
