What comics did you buy today?

expensive day today but, what the hell. Captain Britain no.24 with free gift as "buy it now" and Warlord no.69 with free gift - £49.00 and £33.00 respectively with postage on top. About 8 months ago, I did bid £62 on the same Cap. Britain with free gift and lost out; so, I feel I have something of a gain in that respect. With Warlord and their early free gifts, the price I paid is about consistent with their current value. The last one I bought, which was issue 20 cost me £29. So, in all, quite chuffed. On the other side of the coin, it means I will be working extra overtime to compensate for my fiendish obsession. Luckily, I have that avenue to exploit. Since xmas, I've had the opportunity to work everyday. I still find time for fun, however

Last night, read the Death Game 1999 strip in the Actions I bought. It is funny how the strip suddenly changes after the comic is "saved". A bomb to kill Taggart does not go off simply because his bike gets a puncture. And the government official who wanted "no heroes" had a sudden change of heart and admitted that Taggart & co "had earned their freedom". What a cop out. Far better was the original story line as shown in the Action - The Story of a Violent Comic.

The sad thing is that I think it was ahead of its time and that it could have prospered if it was printed today.

Today the mightily weird "Candy and Andy: A Penny for the Guy" arrived courtesy of eBay - a vital addition to my fireworks comics collection, in which a farmer gives C & A a box of bangers in return for using their guy as a scarecrow. Abundance of sinister photos of uncanny child puppets, rubber toys playing music, and pyrotechnics.

hi,abacus, I accept I pay over the odds for a lot of comics (I do get bargains now and then) but, don't forget: I have no children nor permanent partner on which to bestow financial delights. I do have two nieces when I splash out on their birthdays and xmas. So, with so much overtime, I am in an envious position to gain what many collectors can't due to lack of money. But, believe me, I can't get everything I want. There are collectors out there who dwarf my budget. Patience is the key; you will surprise yourself when you win something where you might have thought you never stood a chance. No matter your budget, keep plugging away. Invariably, you will be outbid... but that lucky day, you will win

No, not knocking your spending habits Geoff42 sometimes if you want the best you have to pay the going price.it's just that I was contrasting the different philosophies on buying.Neither has more merit than the other in fact I probably spend less than most members of this forum that is because I am more interested in gathering a modest collection and not aiming for perfection.I don't expect my collection to be as valuable as other forum members.
There are two choices with money either spend or save and probably the best thing is to strike a balance between the two.As Dicken's said spending less a week than you earn results in happiness.

Today visited the local Sunday carboot and got two more cupboard fillers, they are---

WARLORD ANNUAL 1984 paid £1
June and School Friend 2nd Book of HEROINES 1971 paid 50p

The WARLORD is in near mint condition apart from the price clipped and the HEROINES I bought because I had never heard of it before and therefore it was of interest to me.Any comic book out of the ordinary as an advantage when it comes to selling.

It's ok, abacus, I didn't take your post as a negative comment. My general rule of budget as regards buying comics is £150 a month... or that is what I would like. But, I always exceed that. It usually varies between £200-£300, hence the overtime comes into play and helps me out. I admire your bargains, by the way.

Jinty summer special 1977 for a tenner, Disney Time issue 1 with free gift from 1977 for £12, Disney Time issue 2 with two free gifts for same price as no. 1, and Marvel Presents the Superheroes Annual 1978 for £8. And he didn't think it too many (sorry Slaine).

Doctor Who Comic #3, but I'm saving it to savour till I have the house to myself and can sit down to read with a mug of coffee and an Abernethy.
Also, the postie delivered a package from Quicksilver with 8 Dell westerns; 7 issues of Gene Autry - earliest being # 37, 1950, and Cheyenne #8. What a good day.

Went to the ephemera fair yesterday and picked up 70 issues of Picture Show and Picturegoer from the 1940s and 1950s £42 the lot and also Denis Gifford's book Victoria Comics which I had never seen before - that was £12.00. Shame its only A4 (ish) sized as the cover repros are all from tabloid sized comics.

There was also a Varoomshka comic strip book by John Kent for £10 but I passed it up. Wished i'd bought it now.
