I have some Sunday Post Fun Sections with Nero and Zero in them - mid seventies I think. I collected it every week until they ruined it by printing the strips on two separate pages. Nero and Zero were also in Buzz I think - a half page strip drawn by Tom Bannister?

According to my hit list, Nero and Zero first appeared in the Wizard issue 413, 1/11/30.
Its quite strange really, I've got early issues (in double figures at least) of all the big 5 except the Wizard. I wonder why they don't appear as often as the others. Apart from issue 1 on Compalcomics recently, which sold for the price of a small country.

Yes the Nero and Zero strip in BUZZ was by Tom Bannister, and was in full-colour: I remember it as a full page, but to be honest BUZZ is one of the few comics of this type from the 60s and 70s that I have never as yet revisited. [GIGGLE is another]

The Bannister version looked very archaic, even compared to the 30s reruns of the same concept by Allan [two 'L's!] Morley.

How much did that first issue sell for, Hawkeye? I did intend to follow that auction but I got sidetracked.

How come your quote has the correct spelling of country - did you edit it? Just thinking its a good thing we weren't discussing the Count of Monte Cristo. :)

Thank you, Hawkeye. I did expect it to go for a high price because in over thirty years of collecting I have only ever seen one other, and that is the one I bought on eBay the best part of a decade ago for £170. Incidentally, I used that authentic issue as the background on the front cover of This Was The Wizard.

How far did you get with your Beano and Dandy collection and your Broons and Oor Willie book collection? Are they both still ongoing?

I've come to the point where every one I want would require me to remortgage my house I'm afraid.

Not exactly comics-related but I can't resist posting this cartoon I recently came across in a late 1938 issue of Punch. This appeared only a few months after the notorious Munich Agreement which prompted British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain to declare 'peace for our time', and shows that his confidence wasn't by any means shared by the whole country. In the haunting words of Al Stewart's song it's a classic example of the world 'Laughing into 1939'!
