Another swap. Another win. I've swapped 30 of my Warlord doubles for the 1979 Action and 1979 Dan Dare annuals and the hardback of the Rat Pack: Guns, Guts and Glory reprint book. Not a bad deal even if I say so myself.

I tend not to buy older Rupert annuals because of the similar cover art making it difficult to know whether I already have them or not.When I do buy them I'm always impressed by the artwork inside truly one of the best children's annuals ever produced.

Bought last week but arrived today, the first five issues of Scorcher including the free gifts. For the grand sum of £3.19. Who say's there are no bargains out there.

That was a great result. If I'd seen them I would have definitely had a good bid on them. Can't believe the seller didn't mention the gifts in his title!

I'm in my bread and butter mode at moment - a couple of Victors and a Hotspur from 1978 have been obtained. I've practically cleared up the year 1977 where the boy's titles are concerned... i'm half way through the humour comics... the girl's is a pain, although they are considered the least priority. Marvel Uk is all but cleaned up but for an odd issue here and there. A few nursery titles are niggling away at me... i'll get them by hook or crook. The Summer/Holiday specials of 1977 has gone really well in the last few months but, at the same time, the 1978 annuals has stalled somewhat. The only problem is I have to keep pestering Comic John for resealable comic bags and boards and he keeps running out of stock On a lighter note, I've only a few free gifts to obtain and they are the most expensive.

A lovely wee pile of Thriller Picture Library. Ordered on Monday, arrived Tuesday. Great service from 30th. Century Comic and the post office.
Included were 2 Eric Parker illustrated stories, Around The World in 80 Days and Max Bravo, War Eagle of France. Awfy nice. And sitting here perusing the comics with a cup of coffee and listening to The Pirates is a great way to spend an hour or two

Recently purchased a bunch as well Paw(although most were Australian issues). Six or so of them with Sep Scott art, (He certainly knows how to make pirates look ugly!) The Talisman is a good read with some nice full page art, have you read that Paw? As you say "Awfy nice".

Nice one matrix. It doesn't bother me if they are not British price originals, I'm always happy to find them. AsI have a gap between about #50 and 60, I don't have and have never read The Talisman.
I'm about half way through Secret Operator, #73, which is drawn by Scott. As there's no need need to read these comics in order, I'm picking at random but keeping the 2 Eric Parker stories for last.
Talking about Sep Scott, I have a reprint of Jane Eyre - happy to buy them if the originals aren't available or are too expensive when I see them - and it's beautifully done.
There don't seem to be many other fans of picture libraries, apart perhaps for Commando and some of the girl's libraries, on this forum, as I seldom read comments on them. And as it was an incredibly popular format for a fair number of years, I am surprised. Not only TPL but Super Detective, Cowboy Picture Library, the Pearsons line, Micron and the many smaller publishers, and , of course, some of those romance libraries. Some great reading in that lot.
Actually there are a lot of gaps in my collection but it's good fun chasing the missing ones down. It's just a big drain on the funds.

I'm a big fan of the non-war picture libraries too (I've even got a few pages of original artwork from Quo Vadis, Dorian Gray and The Count of Monte Cristo). Thriller and Super Detective definitely featured many of the best artists in the business along with some of the best scripting. Also, if you enjoyed The Talisman I can highly recommend Cecil Doughty's work from Look & Learn that Steve Holland collected in the book 'Pages From History' - especially his masterful comic strip serial 'The Crusader'.

I originally purchased them for the Scott covers, then started reading them and got hooked!
Like you say Paw the variety of stories and artists makes for some great reading.
Thanks Phil I keep saying I will purchase some of his books as was looking at one the other day, then forgot all about it!

I do have one page of original Scott artwork from Jack & Jill. It was drawn towards the end of his life and is fairly indifferent - still it was relatively cheap, and it WAS Scott!

Is that Uncle Ben? I know what you mean if it is, but at least you have it. His Thriller Library cover art is very expensive, I like the 'Man who stole the crown jewels' cover.
