It's ridiculously early as ever, but Amazon has some cover art up for the 2017 annuals, all out 1st August. I thought the publication of both Broons and Oor Wullie books last year, was in celebration of the 80th anniversary, but it looks like they're publishing both again this year.
Strangely there's no Beano Annual up yet that i can find.
lets hope the strips are given a message about the past at the bottom of the page and not cut up...
Also no recent annuals..and reprints from recent books they've done...
I love this book and look forward to it every year...the World War 2 book was the last good one..
Nice to see a fairly original cover for the Dandy annual this year - the last few years have been predictable as anything (Here's Dan eating a cow pie, again, or dancing with a bear, again). I know times have changed and it's mostly aimed at the nostalgia market these days, but my nostalgia for the Dandy annual is fresh and exciting stuff that you wouldn't fit into the weekly comic - it's Xmas morning, you want something different!
The Beano cover's fairly terrible, definitely looks unfinished - Roger looks TINY compared to Plug, haha! Just going to take this moment to state how much I hate how Walter's become a "villain" - I get he's always (mostly) been Dennis's nemesis, but the reasoning is solely because Dennis isn't a good kid, not because Walter's some kind of megalomaniacal supervillain... Bah, it's too early for this, haha!
Walter's personality change was a necessity, otherwise Dennis menacing him would basically be bullying. They'd already tried making Dennis less of a bully (back in 2009) - fans hated it. So now they're making Walter more of a villain, so that Dennis is just being nasty to someone who is equally nasty to him. Dennis's MO is "I want to have fun, and I won't let anyone stop me". Usually "anyone" means Dad, Slipper, or Creecher. But Walter now has some power, since his Dad is the Mayor, so his role is now similar to the authority figures, that being the role of a spoilsport.
Saw the Dandy...Oor wullie the Broons collection...Rupert and Beano and Dandy collection in WHSmiths..
Bought the book Beano and Dandy..
It has some nice stuff.. no wording...no dates..suggestion of slipper But no slippering..
of course 70's annuals reprinted..
mostly strips with one colour..so not many black and white..
so though its great to have a book like this...no rare stuff..or unused artwork..so that was a shame going from the title of the book..
Still worth getting.
I miss Beano annuals and The Dandy having fun layouts...none in the new ones..it just looks like the comic and not different..
the inside two pages and last two pages are the only fun poster type..
Have to say that Beano book - sorry, I mean "annual" - cover is pretty uninspired, especially compared to the Dandy one, which is really rather good. Having a plain yellow background is of course a classic Beano Book look (I think about fifteen so far had yellow backgrounds). But I prefer the Dennis annual from 1964 for characters bursting out of the page...
Yeah, the format has definitely changed recently. Some of the Beano Annual's material may even have been made for the weekly comic. Lew Stringer has a couple of unused Pup Parades that he suggests could be either in 2017 (in the Summer Special?) or in the 2018 Annual.
Peter, can you do something about your "My blogs list" please? Two of the images are overlapping the blog post.
EDIT: As for the Beano yellow backgrounds, yeah, it has been done over a dozen times, but mostly in the 1940s with a few later. 1996 was the last one to do so.
