Its a merger of tv programs into The Dandy..

Wouldn't it be a good idea to tell us, so would could tell others they could tell others etc, people will know what to look out for so sales would be good.

We're not at liberty to say. It's more than two weeks before it appears so if word gets out now people will forget to buy it by the time it appears. I'm sure there'll be plenty of information about it in the media closer to the time, as Thomsons are always good at getting info about their comics out there. Besides, I don't think anyone knows the full final details anyway. It's that secret!

Well, except for the editor of course....

Anyway, isn't it more fun to speculate? As Nigel's said, the clues are out there. It's just that people haven't put them all in the right order yet.

...Perhaps it will include more creator-owned work along the lines of the DVC, or Gary Northfield's Derek The Sheep? It seems to me that's the best way to go if you want them to put their hearts and souls into whatever they produce.

That's a bit of a depressing view of people doing comics for a living. Only doing your best when it's in your own, exclusive interest? I doubt that will be true.
And from what I understand, the DFC was far from creator-owned, regardless of the spin surrounding it.
Not saying you're wrong with your suggestion, but as has been discussed before, all the risk is with the publisher when it comes to paper and ink magazines, and retaining copyright seems universal in kids' titles nowadays.

I doubt that. The majority of titles are licensed these days, and the copyright would be with whoever owns the TV property, not the publisher. For example, News Corp and DC Thomson don't own the copyright on the Wallace and Gromit strips in The Sun and BeanoMAX - Aardman do. Even The Simpsons is no exception, as Bongo Comics, their publisher, was set up by Matt Groening himself, the series creator, yet the copyright belongs to 20th Century Fox.

I think most of us already give our all on a strip, whether we own it or not. The driving force is "Will this entertain the kids", not "Will this strip bring me dividends in the future".

My thinking has always been that the comics companies don't own my brain so if I want to create a character I own I'll do that independently. We're creators. We can always create something new for ourselves even if we don't own the stuff we do for The Beano etc.

Could I add to this looooong list of suggestions and guesses by saying that perhaps the Dandy will return with an old logo, not the original but one more familiar with people of my age?

I am guessing due to your August 20th post featuring a picture of George and the Dragon on the logo

That post was made before we even knew that there was going to be a revamp (he simply couldn't find a decent sized version of the current logo). And none of the Dandy's various logos are as famous as The Beano's, which has only had minor alterations since 1971. The one you mention was in use from 1987 to 2004 (17 years), and is Dandy's second longest running after the 1937-1960 one (23 years). However, the Comic Libraries didn't adopt the 1987 logo until 1993, and the Golden Years books - which started in 1987 - kept the 1984 logo until the changeover to 60 Years in 1997. The 50th birthday roundel used in 1987-88 actually had the 1984 Dandy logo on it, but the logo changed before the actual anniversary (as you can see on this sticker album). The 1987 logo really isn't as famous as you'd think.


Looking at the Dandy covers page here (which needs updating, no mention of Xtreme at all) I noticed this on the issue 3007 page:

For the Beano to beat the record, Dandy would have to fold or be absorbed by the Beano.

Beano managed it anyway, thanks to Dandy going fortnightly. The next Dandy is 3508, the same week's Beano will be 3558 - so Beano is now 50 issues ahead.

Does he say that somewhere Digi, have I missed it? Or are you just claiming that on his behalf? I'm just interested. If the Dandy has got (and its quite likely they have) a new logo it would have been some blunder to stick it up on his blog ha ha

They work roughly one month in advance when they put a comic together at DC Thomson and I am sure a relaunch with all the promotion material needed, the change in structure, new artists etc etc would warrant a bit of artwork like that being commissioned beforehand. Even if its only for a test to show the editor. I dare say a major relaunch of a comic such as The Dandy has been on the cards for a lot longer than you would imagine, you cant just throw a relaunch together.

Nice potted history of the logos, The Logo seems to be one of the sorest points of the current/soon to be old comic so maybe they have taken a step back in time with the logo to cheer us miserable old farts up?
