Today i got an issue of Football Picture Story Monthly that i happened to see cheap on the front page of Ebay. I'd always assumed it was "like Commando but with Football", but actually it's more like the Fun-Size Beano/Dandy. There's two stories in it, with the inside front cover given over to three short, small comedy strips. There's also "colour", of a kind - odd patches of red that are used during matches to more clearly seperate the teams, and pretty much randomly in other scenes.

I also got an issue of Collector's Digest from 2000, this was a long-running magazine dedicated to the old text story papers, mainly the Amalgamated Press ones. I don't know why i didn't start getting it sooner! (well mainly because i was actually collecting the papers themselves)

I was a regular reader- there were two a month, and one of the two was divided into 2 stories as you describe (44 pages and 22 pages or something like that) while the other was one long complete story "Commando" style, with a different humour strip on the inside front cover.

Not exactly a comic, but at our local hospital, they sell books at £1 so when I saw J T Edson Omnibus Vol 5, I had to pick it up. In case you are wondering what the link is to comics, then I will explain. Vol 5 collects the three Dusty Fog stories together Quiet Town, The Town Tamers and The Small Texan. And inside the The Town Tamers, we have the inscription AUTHOR'S NOTE. These stories originally appeared as a strip cartoon in The Victor and I extend my gratitude to Messrs. D. C. Thomson & Co for allowing me to turn them into a book. How cool is that? :D

I just had the biggest ever comic purchase this morning at 26Pigs.

Outside of a handful of issues I already had (about six issues), I bought all the Sparkys (plus a few that were not listed)

I should get them sometime mid-end of January.

12 years worth (1965 to 1977) would be about 600 issues! That's certainly a large haul.

Presumably Blaing is saying he bought all the Sparkys 26pigs had for sale rather than every one DC Thomson published.

Ah OK. The second story, Bobby's Boots (no relation to Billy!) is pretty short and abrupt. I'll have to collect more of this publication!

Anyway today i got the 1899-1900 volume of Chums, but with the first 208 pages missing! Should have read the ad more closely. Oh well serials didn't run through a whole volume so i still have about four or five complete ones, plus all the short stories, small articles and comic strips! (Wierdly Chums started off with quite a few comic strips and then reduced them. In volume 1 (1892-3) there would be one taking up a whole page in each issue, then by the early 1900's generally some small ones 'scattered' across pages, and by the 1910's only single panel cartoons!)

Philcom, you are definately right.

About 55 issues in total. (mainly 1971-1976 issues)

With this lot, I have about 120 issues in my collection, so I still have about 500+ to go.

Usually I save up for a big DVD purchase every six months, but as there wasnt much out I wanted, the money instead went to buying the Sparkys.

A half-year bound volume of Chips from 1943. I thought bidding would go crazy (you can bet a volume of Beanos from the same period would) but in the end i was the only one. There's two other similarly-aged volumes still on Ebay!

Felneymike you seem to be buying a lot of comics recently, you must have a big collection?

I was tempted but at a starting price of £25 when the description contains the word "shabby" I think I'll pass.
