What comics did you buy today?

Yeah, the binding is of the "fabric over soft card" type, and doesn't feel all that strong. But no pages are actually loose. The pages aren't brittle but that wartime paper is very very thin so you have to be careful with them anyway!

Also the Blitz was mostly over by 1942 XD

A couple of old Viz annuals for 50p. "Viz on The Bone" from 1996, which i bought once before but now I can't find it, and "The Big Bell End" from 1993.

My mate Steve went to 30th Century comics on Saturday and spent £300 mostly on Girls Crystals. He has persuaded me to accompany him next time.

Thanks to the Blitz me and my mates spent the 60s with a huge three block bomb site as our playground here in Rotherhithe. We used to build our bonfire round there but one year a bunch of kids from nearby Silwood Estate nicked it - like an army of leafcutter ants they outnumbered us. Wouldn't surprise me if Danny Baker was one of them as he lived on that estate then.

Issues 55 to 64 of the Nelson Lee Library, from 1931. Bound in a nice-looking, neat book. Though the issues themselves are un-cut and all slightly different sizes. Great condition, though.

Bought the latest issues of Beano and Dandy today, and on Monday got myself the Very Best of Black Bob book, which will be a birthday present from my Grandma.

Just a little anecdote and not me buying in this instance, but I got a Beano and Dandy sold today.

A man and his wife, and another bloke the same age (40s or 50s) were walking round my nearest big WHSmith together, and were obviously soon to be entertaining a kid, because the wife was looking around for comics.

She found the big display of bagged kids' periodicals and said, with some disappointment "Oh, it's all these modern-type comics! He won't like any of those!"

The husband asked "Don't they do the Beano and Dandy any more?" and the man chortled "They'll have stopped doing those years ago. They'll be collectors items now, on Ebay!"

Well, I pointed out The Dandy, which the wife seemed delighted by - and equally so by The Beano she found hidden behind it. Yes, they still exist!

The man, flicking through, asked "is Desperate Dan still in it?" and being shown the back cover gave a big BY HECK! look and laugh at Jamie Smart's Dan.

Anyway, both issues were enthusiastically picked up.

It was nice to see these jovial, friendly folk looking for comics to buy for a kid, and their obvious pleasure to see that The Dandy and The Beano were still being published.

I recently picked up a couple of issues of Wow! (5 issues)

Although this came out after my reading period of 1974 to early 1982, it is part of my plan to pick up odd issues of comic titles that were released before and after my reading period.

I plan to pick up a few more pre-1974 and post 1982 issues of some comics after I return from holidays on the 16th of next month.

I doubt they'd watch CBBC, and any children of their own would most likely have grown up and left home. And with only one copy each of Dandy and Beano (the Beano hidden), they could quite understandably have left thinking you only get these "modern-type comics" now.

Oh, and I also saw a not so lucky kid in Sainsbury's who was attracted to the cover of Toxic by ... Harry Hill. (So it does work.) "Harry Hill!" he chimed, reaching out.

Alas, his dad hurried him away and didn't let him grab it.

(Sadly my local Smiths has cut its Dandy order down to two issues again. A mighty drop from the 30 or so it had for the relaunch.)

As for what comics I bought today: the latest Toxic and Marvel Heroes. Both often ignored on this group, and I can understand that there's no nostalgic attachment for older collectors, but they do feature all-new British strips. Unlike most of the other titles stuffed into the shelves, which are sadly feature-based and devoid of any strips.

Yeah, the children's comics without any strip material don't deserve to be even be called comics. Total licensed tat. They should market them as children's lifestyle magazines. Unfortunately, it seems one of the comics which did have original comic material in, the Power Rangers magazine, has been discontinued (Egmont's website says out of stock, subscriptions not available, and I didn't see in the shops in the last two weeks). Egmont probably axed it because the show is currently off air, although a new season is due later in the year. Either that, or the franchise's change of ownership caused their license to be stopped.

Assorted Union Jack's from 1903/4, including the first re-launch issue. Mind you they are missing the covers. There's also several duplicates with another bound volume from 1904 I own. Neither has consecutive issues, just random ones thrown in. In fact I now own three copies of "From Board-school to 'Varsity"!

Also a bound volume of The Beano from 1984, so I now own the issue that was on sale when I was born! The binding looks brand new and has the name of the ebay seller on it. He must have got a collection of mint comics and had them bound to sell. No doubt i'm going to be hit with the rollyeyes smiley now with ravings about how he has "devalued" them. But the value of comics is really in the stories and art, which are much better preserved in a strong binding!
