The distaff side of Robin's band was highlighted in the strip 'Maid Marian' in the Bunty in 1958 (Nos 18-37) drawn by Val Bowyer.

Maid Marian also featured in AP's School Friend during 1950 in a beautifully drawn strip by (I think) William Bryce-Hamilton.

I've thought of another one: Robby Hood and His One Man Band which ran in Cor!! in 1971, and looked like it was drawn by the same artist who did so many of the adventure serials in Whizzer and Chips; quite a nice chummy 'younger kid friendly' style.

In it, young Robby Hood runs away from his stepfather in Nottingham and teams up with a Merry Men-style ghost called Muchflower Amber who becomes his servant and guardian simply because he shares the same name as the outlaw - good job too as run-ins with baddies inevitably ensue.

In decades past some enterprising publisher would have jumped on the bandwagon and launched their own Robin Hood comic. After all, the character is in the public domain, and as long as it looked nothing like the BBC series it could freely exist alongside the "official" tv mag.

Sadly, these days getting a new comic onto the High Street shelves is so complicated that it's very unlikely to happen.

Thanks, Kashgar - I grew up reading his Wonder Car and Danny Drew's Dialling Man every week in Whizzer and Chips. And though I didn't get many issues, also remember his Journey to the Stars being a standout in Speed at the start of the Eighties.

Dr Who adventure mag aimed at younger readers will be shortly weekly..so goodnews for the artists who do the comic strip...never bought the mag...But be interesting if a book comes out with the reprinted stories all together...
How many pages does it give to the comic strip.......? lets hope another comic strip will start like Sarah Jane stories...lets give these artists more work.... and the kids something to get excited about...it will surely need to increase the comic strip now it will be weekly!!
