felneymike, I see what you mean - the painted colouring style was often used on holiday postcards. Not so often in comics, especially not in that era when colour wasn't commonplace.

Not often in comics, no-but it was quite common in annuals and the results were often gorgeous. I can gaze at some of the pages of the 1974 Hurricane Annual for ages, just drinking it in.

Just for the sake of it, here is a page of colour Archie artwork from the same annual (art by Alan Philpott, Kashgar informs me).
