There definitely needs to be some way of distinguishing Beano staff from ordinary readers. You should suggest this to the Beanotown webmaster.
Surely the name "Beano Staff" was a dead giveaway?

You'd think so, but Steve Henderson obviously doesn't agree. It's not unlike a message board. Here, the mods names appear in red, everyone else's in black. I was only saying maybe that's what Beanotown.com should do.
Presumably members' aliases have to be approved before they can comment, (in case anyone uses an inappropriate name) so anyone calling themselves "Beano Staff" who wasn't Beano staff wouldn't get through would they?

They do moderate, but I would think it would be to prevent swearing. They don't check too thoroughly what's being said though, I've seen a comment asking who the artist is, posted
after Beano Staff already confirmed it was Dave Eastbury. Daft, since the question had already been answered. But if someone pretended to be staff, then yeah, I suppose the message wouldn't appear. I still think staff should be easily identifiable from everyone else.

I did take consideration before I made the claim. If you look at Dave Eastburys website you can see quite a variation of his work but nothing quite as drastic a change as the new look Ball Boy. Futhermore if you look at the Beano websites comment facility you can indeed put anyname, ands perhaps the beano staff name was an oversight on behalf of the web admin seeing as its not a swearword or anything.
But as I said before why someone would make the trivial claim was and still is beyond me.
I there anyone here that would actually have placed the preview work on the website as the work of Dave Eastbury? Think back to when you first saw it. No matter who drew it I must say Im a big fan of what he has produced his 'new' style is a massive improvement.

Once I read here that it was Dave, I went yeah, I can see that now. It's a nice change, I think.

Not quite sure why you're pursuing this Steve, when the writer of Ball Boy himself has confirmed that it's Dave's work and that "Beano Staff" is indeed a Beano staff member.
Looking at Dave Eastbury's website (
http://www.eastburyillustration.com/) he is quite versatile.

Spot illustrations are far easier to create to a style than a full strip. Be good to see how Ball Boy looks in its strip form.

Completely off topic, didn't Dave draw Little 'Orror from
Cracker?

Doubt it, you're talking over 30 years ago. Here's a picture of him, from

Speaking of Little 'Orror, I seem to remember that in one of the early Freddie Fear strips (drawn by Dave Eastbury as it happened), there was a picture of Little 'Orror on the wall. It was a good find, though I doubt many readers would have recognised him, even back in 2002 (Cracker ran from 1975-76 I think). However, I had already seen him in Classics.

Hi sorry to drag this on but I didnt mean for this to get this far, I am aware of Dave Eastburys versatility although theres nothing on his website (which I looked at before making my comments) anything like the style of his new Ballboy (which I am really really looking forward to, not being 100% on board with the last one looks wise) I also saw Classic Comics comment which confirmed it for me.
I hope my initial confusion can be viewed as a compliment towards Daves newfound style. Looking forward to it.
Anyway Ill shut up, this whole Im digging has reached the bedrock!!!!

The new look Goalie (the original one), Titch, Dimmy and Chandra have been unveiled. There's also a pic of BB from the 70s on there.

The stripes aren't going after all. The new title box has been revealed.

Ball Boy returns in the SEPT 19TH 2009 issue, no 3501 - so subscribers should see that tomorrow.

Has this ever happened, by the way? I'm unaware of any Beano or Dandy characters in translation. Am I wrong?

I'm sure the Beano Club page once pictured a reader reading a foreign version with a different name. Never heard anything else about it before or since though.

No idea, but it's amazing where some of our work turns up. I remember seeing a German reprint of Sonic the Comic in the Egmont UK offices one day, and I think Toxic is reprinted in Turkey.
I somehow felt that the Beano monthly comic (was it Beano Super Stars?) looked like it was prepared for an international audience, but I don't think it actually was.
