The pop-up castle in Magic comic No. 1 was pretty impressive too...

Mention of the 'Gulp' free gift brings back happy memories of a similar gift from four years earlier that I certainly considered generous at the time. This was the 'Creamola Foam' drink crystals that were given away for three consecutive weeks in Buster in May 1966. Lemon, Raspberry and Orange heaven in a time before e numbers and any mention of hyperactivity in children. Can it really be fifty years ago this very week that I was enjoying all that frothy raspberry goodness! My, how time flies!

On the topic of most generous free gift I think Butt-Ugly Martians No.1 is a contender for giving away a free digital watch in issue 1! Just goes to show how technology that was once state of the art has become so cheap over the years.

I can't remember much about the taste, 50 years on, but I don't think I had the following week's other flavour so perhaps it didn't leave a good impression.

I did like the lemonade powder they used to sell in Woolworths around that time though.

The lemonade powder I remember was actually in the form of tiny crystals. We consumed it by repeatedly licking the end of an index finger, dipping it into the paper bag and licking off the adhered crystals. Is this the same kind of powder that you are referring to, Lew?

I've just looked at the back of the Cor! gift of Gulp and the ingredients are Citric acid, sugar, flavouring and colouring.

Could be good for descaling your kettle with.

If anybody has any old Cresta bottles left over from the Seventies I'd be interested to hear what made all that froth.

If I remember correctly, Cresta had Tartrazine in it which some people had an allergy to. I just remember that it was "Frothy Man"!

Yes, that's it. That was an alternative way of digesting it (and would give you a more condensed and tastier 'hit' doing so) but they were intended to be dissolved in water like those free crystals mentioned earlier. I enjoyed either method.
