I've never seen Epic before either! Going by the cover design and tone of the blurbs it seems to be pitched at a slightly older reader than Lion weekly. Interesting.

Didn't buy them today, but the nice friendly postman dropped a few rather nice items through my letterbox today.

First off, was three Victors 598, 600 and 601 which were bought to fill a gap of one. It was rather nice to read through them though.

Next up was the Rover 1956 Annual, which I am still reading through. Adding to the text story debate, I have enjoyed it so far. Plus, one of my favourite stories seems to have come from one of the stories and that is The Engineers Wore Fur Coats. A story set in the backwoods of Canada where the local store-owner wanted electric lights but didn't want to pay exorbitant prices. This story was later drawn up and published in one of the Hotspur Annuals. I was going to leave collecting the text papers until I had collected the illustrated comics, but when I saw that there was a Braddock and Tupper story in there, I could hardly pass up the chance to get an early annual for peanuts!

And finally, still to be read are two more Crunch issues. Might read them as a text break after I finish the Braddock story!

Don't forget the free preview issue which introduced the whole storyline. This was originally given away with 2000AD, Eagle, Buster, Whizzer, Oink, Roy of the Rovers and MASK, so there must be plenty of copies out there!

Not comics exactly, but an amazing find nevertheless. At the Cartophilic Society's Annual Convention in Walton-on-Thames today I found three Art Canvases given away with The Blue Bird in successive weeks in 1923. They are The Boyhood Of Raleigh from issue 48 (Sep. 22), The Lighthouse from 49 (Sep. 29) and Too Young To Be Married from 50 (Oct. 6). The dealer wanted a tenner apiece for them and I paid him before he realised how rare they were and doubled the price. In all my years of collecting I've never clapped eyes on any of them before. I have no idea what I'm going to do with them but there was no way I was going to leave them there. It's just the bug, isn't it?

That was a good find, finding comic free gifts 86 years old as well.

I'm watching a wildcat preview copy on that well known auction site.

I bought Scott McClouds 'Understanding comics' Amazing attention to the details that I find hard to explain! Been after it for ages, nice to see a comic book thats not 'how to draw' anyone got his other stuff? any good?

Good luck! In my opinion it's worth it for Ian Kennedy's brilliant colour centrespread alone! (Incidentally a quick scan of 'that well known auction site' has not only just turned up a copy of the preview for sale but also a £2.25 'Winter Special' which claims to tell "how it all began" as well. Curiously enough I don't remember the last item at all! Then again, for completists there are the issues of Eagle & Wildcat which continued a number of the stories for several months, and even gave away a Kennedy poster in which some Wildcat characters fought the Mekon alongside Dan Dare. )

I picked up this Football comic today for 50p, does a anyone have any copies, I had never seen or heard of it before today.
It's a bit like Score with strips and football features.
Only 24 Pages.

This is Issue No.14 so Issue No.1 was Issued on August 16th 1975 just in time for the new season.No mention of it in the family tree section so I have no idea how long it lasted.

That's a strange one, from the rather "basic" artwork it looks like one of those many football fanzines that did the rounds in the early 80s (there were at least 3 I saw in the Glasgow area dealing with Scottish football - "A lotta Balls" etc that had articles and comic strips, some in colour) but a 1975 weekly, I'm not so sure what that was will be interesting to hear from folK.

"Wheres the mainman Kashgar" Do you know anything about the above Football comic?

The art does seem very amaturish (not that my football strip, Cannonball Cartwright, is going to be much better!), reminds me a bit of early Viz, but that didn't start until 79.

Actually that Escort is probably the best-drawn thing in it. An artist who is way better at cars than people... after my own heart XD.

Just picked up the 1962 Dennis the Menace Book with a lovely, glossy cover. The nice thing about these early Dennis Biannuals (which alternated with Beryl the Peril Books) is that David Law himself was still on hand to provide lots of new features alongside the regular reprints from Beano and The Weekly News. I particularly like this sequence from the front and back covers in that it doesn't really involve a straightforward gag so much as an exercise in sheer surrealism: notice how the weird, dreamlike atmosphere is curiously enhanced by the way in which the observer's eye level switches unaccountably from worm's-eye to lampost-top. Fantastic!



I was also struck by this fantasy of an entire football team composed of Dennis clones as it provides Law with a rare opportunity to create the sort of comic crowd scene more often associated with Leo Baxendale's work on The Bash Street Kids and The Banana Bunch:
