Re: What comics did you buy today?
Went to the London comic mart and bought 29 issues of Frolix from 1929-30 - I already have about a dozen issues and it finished at 46 so now have nearly a full set including the last issue. Some issues have Reg Carter strips signed by him. Also got seven pages of original artwork from Buster - mainly the 1987 Buster Holiday Special including Lil Bruvver by Frank McDairmid, Roy's Toys by Sid Burgeon (Buster HS 1988), Beastenders (Buster Book 1989) artist unknown, Rapping Rat by Barry Glennard, Good Guy by Terry Bave, Melvyn's Mirror by Dave Follows and School Belle by Tom Paterson - £10 per page. Very pleased.

A very good price indeed. I could never understand why other Buster artists didn't want their artwork back. The offer was open to all of us and Fleetway returned it at their expense, but I remember the editor telling me that only myself and one other artist (can't remember who now) took them up on it.stevezodiac wrote:Went to the London comic mart and bought 29 issues of Frolix from 1929-30 - I already have about a dozen issues and it finished at 46 so now have nearly a full set including the last issue. I wonder if it was Leo Baxendale - if the offer went back to the Seventies artists - who'd you'd think would appreciate the value of his original artwork. But if it was, I doubt you'd have forgotten it was him.

Was this a revamp of Terry Bave's My Bruvver! strip from Knockout?

It definitely wasn't Leo unfortunately. It was someone who was working on Buster when I was, as the opportunity of having artwork returned only started in the 1980s. Possibly Jack Oliver. I can imagine he would have wanted his originals.Raven wrote:Lew Stringer wrote: The offer was open to all of us and Fleetway returned it at their expense, but I remember the editor telling me that only myself and one other artist (can't remember who now) took them up on it.

I've just noticed that Raven has passed 2000 posts at the exact moment this very thread has passed 2000 posts (in fact, before I post this, both numbers are at 2001).
This isn't relevant to anything, I just like drawing pretty patterns in random numeric data.

Got issue 740 of Illustrated Chips from 1904. It's not in particularly good condition but it's all readable (and thats what counts) and I got it for less than a tenner.
It's age is really noticeable in the content with a lot of stuff that wouldn't be printed now mainly because it is either blatent animal abuse or slapstick involving caricatured blacks.
Some of the adverts are amusing one in particular for Mr Dalmet's Pomade which says that it can make anyone grow a moustache regardless of whether they are a smooth faced 30 year old or 15. There are a lot of other adverts for medicine which is probably quite dangerous as I would guess that they wouldn't have been regulated back then which is similiar to those modern spam adverts for probably unregulated medicine you see on the internet.
Also lots of adverts for the new comic "The Butterfly".
There are only two strips in Chips whose names I am familiar with Weary Willie and Tired Tim (is that them in the top right hand corner) and Casey's Court. Casey's Court isn't as busy as ones I have seen before but it is very detailed and easily the best drawn strip in the comic. Here's a scan, Anyone know who the artist is? It looks a bit like Chris Riddel (an inside strip by what I think is the same artist looks a lot more like his work), but it obviously isnt by him.

The original artist of Casey Court was Julius Stafford Baker.Tin Can Tommy wrote:Casey's Court isn't as busy as ones I have seen before but it is very detailed and easily the best drawn strip in the comic. I get early 20th century copies of Chips from Ken Graham for £4 apiece. Disbound copies so good condition. He has a website which I have mentioned before googling "Ken's paper Collectables" should take you there.
