That was my guess but there was another Oliver strip in one issue which he had signed J Edward Oliver so why the pseudonym for a second strip? I remember when JEO did a half page in the Disc music paper. I think it was a quiz.

Not sure, Steve. It's possible the one signed J.E.O. may have been a reprint from before he used the Sue Denim alias. I don't really know why he started using a pseudonym. (Or if I did know I've forgotten. )

Peter Gray knew him quite well. Any ideas, Peter?

Yesterday I got the latest Commando's and Phoenix, dum de dum.
But I also finally got the Bendatti Vendetta book! I read the final part of it years ago (whenever it was originally printed). The rest of the story looks just as good, and the artwork is incredible.

I can answer that one... Vid Kid and Cliff Hanger did co-exist (thus the second Oliver strip) and JEO signed every Vid Kid as Sue Denim. He tried to draw in a different style for Vid Kid, but speaking entirely for myself, I wasn't even slightly fooled.

Jack loved having games with the reader...and it did last a long time before anyone guessed it was him..

readers only started to guess it was Jack when the profile of Sue came up..

Jack loved puzzles...and his strips always had lots of extras..
Every Vid Kid had a deliberate mistake in it for instance..and also Jack in the strip..

Dandy annual 1958 the oldest comic i now own,33 x beanos,39 x busters,buster hol special 93 ,96 buster & monster fun hol special 1993, 8 x best of buster monthly inc first 3 combined with funny monthly ( i did not even know they had merged,so does this count as another title buster absorbed) & also 6 x cheeky (only 11 more needed now for complete set )

I went to the London comic fare today but didn't buy any comics just a couple of dvd box sets (It Takes a Thief and Bat Masterson - season one of each) But Robert Nixon's daughter was there and I spoke to her for a while. It was at Phil Clarke's table and he had a lot of Allan Morley Keyhole Kate original artwork and some Dandy covers artwork. There was one seller who had some really nice late 50s Beanos with beautifully straight edges. I wonder where they came from....?

I saw those Beanos at the Collectors Mart too and yes they were an amazing grade. But I opted for a copy of Countdown No. 3, in fine condition, with John Pertwee as Dr Who on the cover, it being the fiftieth anniversary this year and all that.

I saw a nice sight in orbital comics in london today a load of annuals going cheap i bought desperate dan 91,92,93 Beezer 73,75,77,84,86,88,89,90,93. Topper 73,81,89,90,91,92 & beryl the beryl 87 but that one had a missing damaged spine.They still have beanos ,dandys,Busters, whizzer & chips annuals if anyone is interested but i had those already.They also have nice runs of marvel uk titles Dracula lives Planet of the apes,Dr who etc which i would have bought if i had the money.
I also bought Phoenix issues 48-66 i am glad but pleasantly surprised this is still running as i'm sure it is available in a lot less shops than the Dandy was.

I got another 33 Buster fortnightly's,32 Dandys from the 70s.70 various Topper 73-75,and decided to start collecting 2000ad again seeing as Dandy has finished so got all issues from 2013 so far & the only American title i get at the moment iss 4-5 of Superior Spiderman & also won over 100 issues of tiger on ebay as well.

Judge Dredd - Lawman of the Future issue 1 (appears to have been an attempt to give Judge Dredd the StC treatment in 1995. Even though the film it was based on was 15 rated, meaning anybody who watched it legally was old enough to just get 2000AD anyway. Oh well, 3 'unseen' Dredd stories is not to be sniffed at).

Girl No. 1 (November 1951), because it's a fireworks issue and has a spectacular colour feature by Brock's fireworks which borrows from a book on fireworks that Alan St Hill Brock published in 1949.

Speaking of fireworks issues I just bought this November 1957 copy of the long-running Welsh language comic Hwyl! - a publication that few people outside the Principality seem to have ever even seen:



Apart from its being the 100th issue I couldn't help being struck by that distinctive red, yellow and blue masthead which, with its bold use of capital letters and exclamation mark placed inside a graphic explosion, sets off the simple four-letter title to perfection.

On the whole its quite surprising that nobody else ever thought of using the same effect...!
