How about that - a thirteen week series on comics on ITV, even with an episode on "the comics of the 1920s".

I found this picture in a Films and Filming magazine. Dennis Waterman in Up The Junction. I don't know why the picture has become all squared - I tried every type of scan to no avail.

Here's a scene from 1966 British film The Sandwich Man. Warren Mitchell is reading what I learned after doing a search for Giants From The Sea on the forum is a copy of The Topper. There's a continuity error in the film when a cut to a view over his shoulder reveals that he is now looking at the page which was furthest away from him in the previous shot.

I remember my parents watching shows like this and the Power Game, The Planemakers and City 68? They were all political/Business world type shows which had no interest for me. I think Paul Daneman was in one called Spy Trap which sounded like my cup of tea but it was more Tinker Tailor than Man From UNCLE. ITV had Hadleigh with Gerald Harper and Mr. H with Harry H Corbett (I think).

Almost forgot the Rat Catchers and The Trouble Shooters.

Also, I'm being a bit of a facetious nitpicker here, but:

Zzzap! was a comic book that was brought to life (literally), and ran for 8 years from 1993 to 2001. Here's the opening titles of the first series from the first episode, it features many iconic comics of the time including Rainbow, Monster in my Pocket, Playdays, The Beano, Buster, and Stingray. On the antique roadshow yesterday they had metal signs of The Beano..Dandy and Hotspur..advertising..from the mid 80's..the Dandy cover looked a bit ropey not by the actual artist...Dennis and Gnasher looked good...

Thanks for this Peter. I thought neither the Dandy or Beano ones looked like they were by the regular artist - they both looked rather strange. I was very surprised by the expert's valuation!

The third episode of the BBC's Diamond Queen documentary, broadcast about a week ago, included some clips from the 1969 'fly-on-the-crown' TV programme, The Royal Family. In one scene, Her Gracious Majesty escorts young Prince Edward into a small shop. On entering the establishment, our Ed heads straight for the ice cream cabinet and selects a lolly, oblivious to the enticing Alan Class titles on the American Magazines (!) spinner next to the door.

I can see a Sinister Tales and a Creepy Worlds, don't know what the others are.

Frustrating. I can't make out the others. But I think the shop is either on the Balmoral estate or in Ballater

Oh that's wonderful - I have such fond memories of those spinner racks (though for this sequence I suspect they must have carefully removed the usual layer of 'Men Only' mags so the Queen wouldn't be embarrassed!).
