I won about 15 early issues of Tracy from e-bay including a No. 1. That only duplicated 1 issue from my existing collection as I purchased issued 12 when it originally came out over 30 years ago now.

Bunty 1398 (Oct. 27 1984), Diana 32 (Sep. 28 1963), 39 (Nov. 16 1963), 54 (Feb. 29 1964), 56 (Mar. 14 1964), Detective Weekly 168 (May 9 1936), 173 (Jun. 13 1936), and The Book Of Training For Every Sport (part 1) (Mar. 19 1932), the first free gift to be given with The Red Arrow, Thomsons' short-lived story paper for boys. I have had Part 2 for several years.

I recently went on a virtual trip to Todmorden to the Border Bookshop and picked up a couple of early 1900s era comics, the Halfpenny Comic, and an early Jester (with Wonder)

I was surprised this morning, when my copies arrived to find that one of my own pre-conceptions about large format comics had been a little false. I was under the impression that the large format comics usually were eight pages in length, but when I saw the Jester, I was surprised to learn that the comic was 16 pages.



Sort of blew my theory about the Beezer and Topper were the only comics to have 12 (and later 16 pages.)

I might do a blog post later on this year about the two issues of the Jester I have.

Nice one Blaing! That looks like a good read? Love the horse laughing at the end! I havn't read any of those 'one penny' comics, so looking forward to your blog.

These comics I would imagine were a bright spot for many who had very hard lives, working long hours in atrocious conditions.

This will have to have a new heading of 'What comics did you buy recently?'. Actually, not comics either come to mention it but rather some fab artwork from the wonderful Lew Stringer (Tom Thug's Skooldayz), plus as an extra treat a bunch of other pages he'd dropped in. Tres fab! (grab yourself some art via his eBay link).
Before that a page arrived all the way from Orkney from Cam Kennedy and a page of Judge Dredd.
Both pages are now propped up on shelves showering my desk in comic goodness (or something along those lines).

bought the Beryl the Peril 1967 for £5 in an old book shop Alton..
lots of late 50's gems and real social history how times have changed...very pleased..

The other day I was in Oxfam, wondering if a book next to a late 20's volume of Chums in the display cabinet was a volume of French story papers (it wasn't, it was a very thick illustrated children's dictionary). My eyes drifted further down, to rest on a book called I Flew With Braddock! The hardback reprint of the serial from The Rover! It was £25, but the two used copies on Amazon are both over £30, so I don't think I did too bad. The dustjacket is long gone, and the covers are slightly battered, but otherwise it's in good nick. Great illustrations too.

I also got the usual Commando's, and finally sorted through my Phoenix collection, to see which issues I'm missing. Off to Gosh on Sunday, they keep old issues in stock, so hopefully I can fill in the gaps.

Well I bought that copy of Sparky No. 1 on eBay, and it's not too bad - the cover has a couple of fairly hefty tears and it's creased and grubby, but the rest of the comic is very nice... and I don't think it was a bad price. In the past couple of years there was a fine copy sold for £70, a fair copy for £50 and a good copy for £15, all without the snorter of course. The last copy with the gift in fine condition that I saw went for £467!

Not a comic, but I bought Marcus Hearn's book Saucy Postcards from The Works for £5.99. Nice little hardback book with the history of the Bamforth cartoon postcards and loads of reproductions of the artwork, including some that Charlie Grigg did after he retired from drawing Korky the Cat.

According to Amazon, the book isn't out for another 2 weeks but The Works have it already. Recommended!

Wow, the Works must've changed their buying policy, they usually get stock in long after the release date. For example, they currently have Classic Beano and Dandy Celebrate Dennis the Menace - which is technically a 2012 annual! And no, they didn't have it in 21 months ago, for some reason, while they do stock annuals, they don't seem to get DC Thomson ones.

Some books are deliberately published for discount bookshops on the pretense that you're getting a bargain of half price or whatever. Well, not exactly a pretense. Somewhere in the UK they will be sold at full price to make it all legal. I'm not saying this book was devised like that, but some books are.
