On the other hand, DC Thomson and Fleetway both looked after their archives. Those who have visited DCT offices will be able to attest to this for them, while it can be assumed from the stock of reprints used in Fleetway publications and specials that they have kept copies of all comics too.

The desperation of the BBC to rectify past mistakes simply isn't relevant to comics. The "home copies" of the shows referred to are permitted under section 70 of the Copyrights, Designs and Patents Act 1988 (as amended) provided they are solely to allow watching at a more convenient time - how far that stretches is another story, but it is totally irrelevant to comics already safeguarded by their publishers.

Of course, there is always the possibility that the Courier Building will have a fire. Wouldn't that destroy the DCT archive? They'd be wise to get it all digitised.

Fair point, Andy-----a lot of older era comics are in danger of being consigned to oblivion, however, through 'corporate neglect'.

I've heard that DCT has most of its archive stored in various locations around Dundee and the stuff in the courier building is the important stuff ie all the Dandy and Beano annuals etc

The dozens of Fleetway bound volumes that Phil Clarke had (and some of which I now own) would suggest the Fleetway archive has been sold off - at least the much older stuff.

IPC don't publish comics any more, and they're the ones who own that older material (pre 1970, except for characters which were still running in 1991 in Buster or Roy of the Rovers, which Egmont took on when they bought Fleetway). So they probably had no use for it. Egmont presumably still have their share of the archive.

I know it is wrong & i don't support piracy but i thought i would try one of the pirate comic cds/dvds so i just purchased the Misty one seeing as i don't own or probably never will own any girls comics just to try it out & i always fancied having a read of Misty.And they will never likely reprint it or any other comics in complete volumes.
Does anyone in the know, know if these can be viewed on an ipad or the like or do they have to be read on a laptop.
I know the cds cant replace the feel /smell of actual product but there is still a lot of comics i have never even read or seen or held yet like victor,warlord all girls titles,i was mainly a humour comic buyer apart from eagle & 2000ad.

bri: I downloaded Abode reader , which is free and takes about two minutes to add to your computer programs.

You can do this now so you can have it ready when your Misty disk arrives: also, you get reader download instructions with most of these disks anyway.

Simply pop the disk into the tray, go to My Computer and the disk should show up after a few seconds as a DVD-RW drive option---this is how it works for me anyway.

It does take a bit of getting used to viewing comics this way, and it's very artificial compared to the real deal--I can only read a few issues at a time this way.

I do agree that I would be unlikely to send off for a whole stack of MISTY comics through ebay----for all the[quite understandable] ongoing rage centred around this method, these works are reading a wider audience than they used to.

I've heard that excuse for supporting piracy used before. It just boils down to "I want", like all the other excuses.

what somebody at egmont,fleetway etc needs to do is put their entire back catalogue of comics & strips online for free so future generations can enjoy them like we used to as kids & still do now,if they have no interest in reprinting them as yellow pages type books like the japanese do.if i ever win the euromillions i will start to do this even if i lose money & dont make a penny

So this "somebody" scans thousands of comics just so people can read them for nowt. Hey, who cares if the business goes bust doing that? Just as long as folks fulfill their urgency to read Sid's Snake without paying for it, right?

Ok Lew let me backtrack a little here, I would pay a small monthly fee to have unlimited access to such archives as im sure many others on here would.with the money going towards all the creators & artists who worked so hard on entertaining millions every week but i fear that would not make much money, But i would rather future generations get to read comics for free than for the art form to die completely as it is in danger of doing ( in this country at least) as all kids want nowdays is ipods & computer games,i would love to have the job of scanning comic archives. so maby in 50 years or when the copyright runs out & they can become public domain or whatever the correct saying is.
I would love the print on demand thing im sure i read somewhere on here where you get dct or egmont to print complete bound stories or serials or comics for you for a small fee & once they reach a certain number of orders say 75-100.
