A book about saucy Bamforth postcards - £5.99 from The Works

Three Scream holiday specials and two issues of Jurassic Park (the Dark Horse UK version from 1994) - £1.50 for the lot from Level Up comics in Grand Central

I actually picked up that book All The FA Cup Finals and also noticed the small "Libraries" type comics - but they're not my cup of rosie. There was one Schoolgirl Story Library - probably the first i've ever seen.

A few weeks ago a local charity shop had dozens of WDL western annuals for sale at 99p each and, while I took pity on my groaning bookshelves by leaving the majority behind, I was sufficiently interested in the 1958 John Wayne Adventure Annual to give it a home. Alongside the usual range of text stories with Walt Howarth illustrations the contents that really intrigued me were these two western strips drawn in an appealing wash technique - apparently by a British artist I've never come across before:





Did anything similar appear in the comics you bought BG?

Incidentally, the only other title I picked up on that occasion was a Television Favourites Comic Annual which contained a lovely 10 page Roy Rogers story drawn by the great Alex Toth



...Wonderful stuff! IMHO nobody did it better!

About 50 issues of Tiger 1984/85 inc final issue its hard to believe the new look only 7 weeks before merging into Eagle.Was it worth it ?,if the comic wasn't given proper time.

I think the final revamp was solely to make it more Eagle-like for a smoother merger. Comics were put together about 8 weeks ahead of publication back then so they'd have been working on the early merge issues by the time the first revamped Tiger went on sale. There was no expectation of that final revamp boosting sales to any extent.

Thanks for the info lew i suppose that would make sense looking at it now,i think that final year of tiger when it changed to the more traditional style of paper used by the rest of the ipc/fleetway stuff is when i started collecting it properly ,having only bought it on the odd occasion as a youngster.

Yesterday I got issue 101 of The Phoenix, from Gosh!
I also looked for a new Spaceship Away, but they didn't have any. Need to look into that, actually...
Also got Bike Boy by Oliver Frey, the artwork isn't as good as in Rogue (looks more computer coloured than 'paint', though I don't think Rogue was actually painted). It's a bit more, er, "full on" than Rogue was. The same shop had his various HIM Library text stories (with the original cover art and line illustrations) reprinted as modern-size paperbacks. But they were £10 each!

Also got a couple of Japanese mangae. One is about football and so-so, but the other one is from Shonen Jump in 1990. Now, Shonen Jump is now home to things like Naruto and Bleach, and in a story called Bakuman (which is about some kids wanting to get their stories published in Shonen Jump) somebody says "we can't show humans killing other humans!". This obviously wasn't a concern in 1990, as a guy gets disembowelled and then a little girl comes along, chops off his ear, and puts it in a bucket. Somebody else gets the skin and muscle sliced off his face and says a few more lines through his skull before he dies. Oh and among the several chopped-off heads is one guy who chops off his own head, and it shoots up in the air like a rocket... this was aimed at the Victor audience!

Perhaps, under the circumstances, the Victor audience would have been wiser to keep their feet on the ground.

Hmmm... it occurs to me that there's a rich tradition of British spoofs on Batman and/or Robin going all the way up to Lew's excellent Dark Newt - but which was the first I wonder? Fatman and Sparrow in 1967 perhaps?

I bought the Dandy 1949/1950 New Year's issue from Phil this week. I received it in the post and it was in brill condition, a really nice buy.
