Yep that's the first of the 13 Annuals 1973 - 1985.

Just had a look at how many I still need 9. :(

Yes, I really like that cover. Probably some good stuff on the inside, too.

I'm going to start a Barry & Boing Appreciation society.
Am I the only one who liked it.
Raven I know you said it wasn't a strong strip, but I loved it.
I wanted to be Barry and have an Alien friend OK he could have looked more like an alien then the "Michelin Man" I thought it was great fun and looked forward to thier adventures every week it lasted for all 107 Issues.

I always liked the design of Boing and the strip is fun, but I don't think it was as creative, inspired or well drawn as, say, the Ron Turner juvenile adventure serials in Whizzer and Chips, including its own boy and robot combo, Danny Drew's Dialling Man.

Boing just tended to bounce out of control all over the place a lot, didn't he?!

But it is fun and I did like reading it as a much younger reader.

My least favourite strip of that era I'm afraid (with Steel Commando coming a close second). I felt IPC were trying to do a DC Thomson type strip that would have suited Bill Holroyd much better than it suited the artist they got. It just didn't work for me, but I'm sure it had plenty of followers.

Doesn't the auction description clearly say it came with issue dated 21st Feb 1970?

Alas Apollo only lasted for 6 issues. The greatest comic never read.

Err probably.
They should have numbered Whizzer & Chips, it would have been about issue 18.

I bet they would have had the best free gifts we never had, a model rocket in issue 1, and some stickers of the moon + Planets in issue 2.

I have a mint copy of that issue - it's great, featuring the debut strips of Jimmy Jeckle and Master Hide, Super Dad, The Scareys of St. Marys and Monkey Nutts - but without the gift. I think I make it issue 19!

The issue after featured a free instant disguise kit.

EDIT: Strangely, I originally put Odd-Ball in with the debut strips, but Odd-Ball had been in the comic since issue one.

Did you buy it when it came out? Did you keep the free gifts?

I did get it when it came out, but back then in its very early days, when I was quite a tiny tot, I'd get a neighbour's child's copy after they'd read it, before it became my own delivered comic.

The mint copy I have here was bought from Ebay a year or two back, part of a whole batch of lovely 1970 issues.

So no free gift in either case.
