My subscription Beano arrived on time this week (3502), flaming postal strike... and it's a Dinosaur theme.

There's a 6 page Bash Street Kids story...Chibis is just `Beano Manga` this week... and there's a single page `60 second Dennis` on the inside back cover.

No Snooty, Freds Bed, Freddie Fear or Ratz.

The Billy Whizz strip looks new, though I'm probably wrong and I'm happy to be corrected,

Numskulls I'm afraid is reprinted from a few weeks ago - the Gingerbread man is back!

Trevor Metcalfe hasn't had any commissions from DCT for a few years now (although he's very much still in business), and the last time he drew Billy it was in the style of Wayne Thompson. Billy's a reprint.

Trevor still has a website. Interestingly, in one recent Beano, they actually reprinted a Metcalfe strip with the Vic Neill-esque thunderbolt hair. They've reprinted a few of Trevor's strips before, which is strange when you think he could be drawing Billy for real.

No Ratz in 3501 either, I wonder if Chipis/Beano Manga replaced it? Same artist after all. The others just gave way to the extra 4 Bash Street pages I assume, although Fred's Bed was also absent from 3501.

Know what you mean about fart gags etc, - and I'm responsible for a lot of them in comics! Not exactly my personal sense of humour, but my view is if you take it to such fantastic extremes in a comic (eg: Stinkbomb blowing a door off its hinges, or Bog destroying a robot by letting rip) then it somehow makes it less offensive.

Amazing how times change though. 40 years ago Ken Reid was always trying to sneak drawings of dog poo into the background of panels, which the art bods at Odhams and IPC would white out. These days they'd draw it in! He was ahead of his time old Ken.

Speaking of poo gags, Toxic's dropped Jamie Smart's Count von Poo strip, due to "unease over the kid-playing-with-poo interface". No Digi, Ratz is still going strong - there are about five episodes ready to roll, and I have several as-yet-undrawn scripts on my desk too. Johnny Bean is also continuing, although he'll be appearing less frequently - the one in this week's Beano is the most recent one I drew, so he'll be gone for at least the next six issues.

Laura's drawing quite a lot in the Beano now - not all that long ago, she was only drawing Johnny Bean. She had stopped inking Ratz at that time, though she was still writing the scripts. I expect we'll see Chipis/Beano Manga appearing quite regularly over the coming weeks, with Ratz and Johnny Bean still appearing, just not quite as regularly.

Laura's versatility is impressive - none of the three strips she does look quite the same, much in the way that for years Dennis the Menace and the Bash Street Kids looked like they'd been drawn by different artists (when DS drew them both). It wasn't until the 1990s that Dennis was drawn in the same style as the kids.

I'm working to capacity at present on Toxic, Beano, Viz and Elephantmen, but hopefully Laura or Jamie will fill the gap in Toxic.

60 Second Dennis this week was too similar to the second cartoon episode. More originality please.

Funny you should mention Dennis not working for you...

both my sons are saying the same kind of thing and I never even mentioned to them about the changes to coincide with the cartoon.

Typical quotes:

"I don't like the way Dennis looks now"
"That was a boring story" - I think that was issue 3499
"Where's the extra Dennis story at the back?" - I know thats back, of a sort, with 60 second Dennis

On top of that, and more concerning considering the hope to pick up readers based on the cartoon, I 'series-linked' the cartoon for them, they watched 3 episodes and deleted the rest . "It's not as good as the old Dennis and Gnasher cartoon" apparently.

On a related point, I know I always bang on about my sons but I hope the board know it's not meant in a 'look at me with my great family' kind of way (although they are great of course! ). It's just that I see them as the 'demographic' that comics like the Beano and Dandy are after (ages 9 and 11) so thought you may be interested in their viewpoint as well as my own!
