Biffo the bear was a bit like Rupert the bear...very human...almost a human with a bear head on..
Korky was much more cat like..

though the early Biffos were more bear like..before he evolved..

Mickey the monkey was also more monkey like in the early days as well..

don't know if these posts need to be moved to talking about DC Thomson cover stars..could be a good topic on its own..

Korky was generally what I said - being a smart cookie who uses his ingenuity to overturn situations isn't really a trait of pretty much every character. Barney bulldog, for example, Sparky's cover star, was more one of life's victims, whose attempts to take control of things or assert authority usually went wrong, with him ending up the butt of the gag in the last panel.

Granted, they're not characters of Dostoyevskian depths; their main purpose was to provide a good, eye-catching visual gag for the front cover. The new Korky, though, seems more a hook for the writer to hang his random thoughts of the week on. I think the look is fine, but that the simple style of the art ultimately works against strong visual storytelling; the characters tend to be quite static, often just standing and talking, or sitting and talking for several panels.

I agree that Ginger was fairly bland; I thought Ginger as the cover star possibly gave Beezer a bit of a bland feel by association, which wasn't really fair as it had a few of Thomson's best strips inside.

Personally i think the reason for the 'bland' cover stars is because in new comics if you have a strongly characterised character on the front its a bit of a risk, he may end up unpopular whereas with 'bland' characters they not usually unpopular just not people's favourite strip. As well as this when a less bland strip gets popular they can put it on the cover because they already know people will like it.

Also this cover star discussion probably as Peter Gray suggested deserves its own thread. Discussion of DC Thomson cover stars duzzn't really have anything t'do with a new Jim Petrie page.

Yep, I'm with this too. Like others, the celebrity aspect was a bit of a turn-off for me at first, but I've grown to really like the strip and its rapid-fire jokes and storytelling. (Even if it does occasionally fall over when trying to be up to the minute - last week's strip, along with the rest of the comic, was full of references to Murdoch's shaving foam pie! Not exactly Drop the Dead Donkey, eh?)

But I don't think anything will persuade me to like Little Celebs or the new covers, or for that matter the two pages recently given over to celebrities every week either...
