great discussion, people, the controversy of scanning technology is sure raging on and won't go away------I myself have a love/hate relationship with scanned comics: I appreciate being able to see hundreds or thousands of pages, which often includes top-notch writing and artwork---the downside is the inconsistency of the home-made scanning.
For example, there's only a finite number of MONSTER FUN comics that exist with the complete BADTIME BEDTIME inserts: it would be more practical for many enthusiasts to access scanned-in comics as there clearly isn't enough of the original paper comics to go around to please everyone.....

That's a good point re multilated comics ISPYSHHHGUY. The original owners of the comics we love to collect were children - probably not the best curators in the world! Even though I was only five when I first started keeping my comics the temptation to cut out certain sections (posters, toys etc) was too strong , particularly if there was nothing special on the other side.
Nothing beats owning a copy of the original comic, although the thrill is a little muted if there is a bit missing (and as I recall ISPYSHHHGUY Badtime Bedtime was the best part of Monster Fun).
This vandalising of comics is of course forgivable - it was what we were enouraged to do (did anyone really seperate Chips from Whizzer or Shake from Shiver?- that was clever marketing - two comics for one did seem a bargain to a young mind! But I'm sure we've all been crestfallen at buying a comic from ebay or a mart and finding a section missing.
But this "slabbing" business? - unforgivable!

I'd say I'm both - I'm collecting some comics/annuals as there are some strips I want to find out more about and see for myself, and as no reprints are forthcoming and attempts to see these over the internet proved fruitless, there only one thing for it - to collect.
But ones I have got I do all I can to protect and I sometimes fret if I coul store them better. But any I do collect I take out, handle carefully and read over a table, then carefully put back in the box.
I do worry on flood, damp and fire damage, but then that is a risk you need to take (and it could happen to the vendor after my visit...), if you really need to see these things. Always remember you could get run down by a bus tomorrow as they say.
Not just thinking of re-sale value, but keeping them for another person's enjoyment perhaps.
